Wednesday Link-Off: The More Things Change

michea-crawford-marksspencer14-01I know that technically this is a short week but I feel like it’s gone long already. Well, the return of winter to Canada isn’t helping matters. I know we’re all about winter up here but even we can have enough after six months.

Anyway, it’s Wednesday so it’s time for the links. Let’s start with Canadian model Michea Crawford.

The Yanks feel that Russia hasn’t learned their lesson about interfering in the Ukraine. Another round of sanctions is quickly making its way down the pipe. (The Daily Beast)

Meanwhile, things in eastern Ukraine have gotten so bad that it looks like war might break out as both Russian and Ukraine military armed forces are on the move. (Bloomberg)

I forgot that Rob and Doug Ford’s Ford Nation show made the switch to YouTube. Well, now that it’s there, Jimmy Kimmel made his much-anticipated guest appearance. (Toronto Star)

Sunday Link-Off: Harper Strikes Back

jessica-pare-esquire14-02It’s the beginning of another week which means that it’s time for us to give you another set of links. I’d like to think of the start of this post as Canada-centric while it finishes a more nationally agnostic. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be something for everyone in here.

But let’s start off with something Canadian. Since Mad Men is back on Sunday, here’s Jessica Pare.

The Fair Elections Act is going to cripple democracy in Canada but most Canadians aren’t arsed about the impending death of their democracy. Why are they so apathetic? (CBC News)

In news that should surprise no one, an upcoming UN report will suggest that Russia did everything in its power to make sure the secession of Crimea happened as they planned. (Foreign Policy)

A retiring SEC lawyer used his farewell speech to denounce the commission’s soft stance on traders who caused the recent financial crisis. I don’t think he’ll find many people off of Wall Street who will disagree. (Bloomberg)

Entertainment Link-Off: Choose Your Destiny

shailene-woodley-instyleIn theatres this weekend are two films that didn’t quite live up to the hype. Draft Day and Rio 2 are going to battle each other out in North America. Meanwhile over in Aussieland, Divergent is finally out! Think of it as Hunger Games lite, but it’s still quite entertaining. So once again, I’ll use this as an excuse to kick it all off with the film’s leading lady Shailene Woodley.

After the jump, some tidbits on the upcoming Transformers flick, Marvel is doing very well in the movie business, waste some time with The Raid 2 online game, check out some red band trailers and Drake goes undercover for Jimmy Kimmel. Continue reading

natalie-dormer-gq14-02Well, if you were looking for something to watch on Sunday night, you probably did fairly well for yourself. Between Game of Thrones and WrestleMania 30, it was a pretty backed night of TV. While we don’t have any GoT links, there are WrestleMania ones today.

So let’s kickoff this post with Game of Thrones star Natalie Dormer.

TV has changed a lot over the last 40-some years since All in the Family changed everything. (The New Yorker)

The Weldon Library crypto code has been cracked and all of UWO was safe. (Toronto Star)

The “Democratic Reform Minister” who is trying to undermine democracy in Canada attacked the Chief Electoral Officer because he’s trying to protect democracy. The Cons have to be run out of power before they consolidate power and instill themselves as a legal dictatorship. (National Post)

Sunday Link-Off: 30

renee-young-wwe14-06It’s the end of the week… Unless you’re in North America. Because our calendars are different, it’s the start of a new week. It’s also the start of a new decade of professional wrestling with WrestleMania 30 tonight. Somehow, the WWE made a WrestleMania XXX logo without making it look like a porno.

Anyway, it’s time for the Sunday edition of the links. Let’s start with Canada’s contribution to Renee Young (AKA Renee Paquette).

The USA hasn’t let go of old grudges against Cuba. They built a Cuban version of Twitter to undermine the Cuban government. (Associated Press)

Mark Cuban, of Dallas Mavericks and Shark Den fame, thinks the US patent system is broken and is in desperate need of fixing. (Politico)

Did you know that professional poker players don’t just make money from tournament pots and endorsements? They also stake other players for a cut of earnings. (Wall Street Journal)

Entertainment Link-Off: Soldier On

scarlett johansson dzThe summer blockbusters are hitting theatres early once again as Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits the cinemas before anyone else. It’s currently certified fresh, so that’s another Marvel film sitting well with the critics and fans. Anyway, you can catch Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Black Widow in the film. Better yet, you can see more of Scarlett in the film Under the Skin, which also opens this weekend.

After the jump, Key & Peele tackle Police Academy, Expendables 3 roll call, figure out how much time you have wasted on TV, some news on How I Met Your Mother, honest trailers tackles Game of Thrones, Sam Jackson is a Boy Meets World fan, check out a real life Spider-Man and David Letterman announces his retirement from Late Night. Wednesday Link-Off: Breaking Book

anais-pouliot-victoriassecret14-21It’s a slightly shorter edition of the Wednesday links today but that doesn’t mean that this a bad set of links. In fact, I think there are a couple of worthwhile reads in here.

But before we get to the links, let’s start with Anais Pouliot.

Newsweek is owned by the International Business Times but do you know who is behind IBT? The answer may worry you. (Mother Jones)

You may not believe it but there are some good guys on Wall Street. The folks behind IEX wanted to make a better platform for traders that didn’t allow for predatory activity. (New York Times)

These guys got a Michael Lewis book deal and a 60 Minutes feature for their efforts too. (New York Magazine)

The term “clickbait” carries a very negative connotation but some writers use baity headlines to get people to read articles that they actually should read rather than just trolling for ad views. (The Concourse)

Speaking of clickbaity headlines, Deadspin had an article about the Washington Redskins launching a charity to get them some good PR over their name. Stephen Colbert made a satirical joke and moronic activists didn’t get it which allowed Daniel Snyder to got off scot-free. (Deadspin)

Entertainment Link-Off: Sail Away

emma watson noah premiereIt’s been a busy week and weekend, so let’s keep the latest ELO short and sweet. At the box office this weekend, you can catch another retelling of the story of Noah. Apparently it’s a hit among critics and no so much among the church-goers. Anyway, Emma Watson is in the flick, so let’s start off with her.

After the jump, Community might be getting six seasons and a movie, catch a bloody deleted scene from The Raid 2, an infographic describing how Hollywood has destroyed America, it would cost tax payers a lot to maintain a superhero, a few new movie trailers to see and finally Dana Williams & Leighton Meester tackles a Fleetwood Mac track.
