Entertainment Link-Off: Be Careful What You Wish For

maggie graceInto the Woods just hit the screens in Australia so that’s the film that I’m most excited about checking out this weekend. Meanwhile, everyone else can enjoy the third installment to the Taken series as Liam Neeson kicks all kinds of ass once again. Despite the constant decline in quality throughout the film franchise, there’s is always a good reason to see it and it’s all because of Maggie Grace.

After the jump, Daredevil gets a release date, 50 Shades of Grey is a bit unusual, some Batman related news, Downton Abbey takes on Cards Against Humanity, parkour is probably not the best method for dealing with zombies and watch the first episode of David, the webseries from Youtube artist David Choi. Doctor Who: Last Christmas Review

doctor-who-last-christmas-headerLike the last couple of Doctor Who Christmas specials, this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special come with some intrigue for the series going forward. Last year’s saw the denouement of the Eleventh Doctor and the introduction of Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor.

This year, the intrigue was all about Clara. Lead actors and actresses on Doctor Who haven’t been particularly long-lived on the show with Amy and Rory being the longest tenured at two-and-a-half season. So while we were all hoping for a happy Christmas story, the whole episode would be about the mystery contract status of Jenna Coleman.

Entertainment Link-Off: Brand New Year

karen gillan spectrum 12015 is here! Fresh start to the new year but it looks like people are still in holiday mode, so it’s another somewhat slow week. Let’s kick off the ELO entry of 2015 with Karen Gillan. It’s too bad her latest show Selfie got canned by ABC. Woulda been nice to have her in the weekly fixtures of the TV viewing schedule.

After the jump, Neill Blomkamp shares some very impressive concept art for his never-been-made Alien film, Oscar flicks getting their annual bashing before award season, Sam Raimi admits Spider-Man 3 was awful, and enjoy some music to your ears in the music recommendation(s) of the week. We’ve featured them on the blog more than a few times over the last few years.  So today, the Best of the Interweb gives Honest Trailers with their own post. It’s the ten best episodes of Honest Trailers based on the number of YouTube likes they’ve received.

Entertainment Link-Off: Holiday Season

evangeline lilly esquireIt’s been a slow week in the world of entertainment as Christmas break is in full gear! Anyway, you should be busy at the cinemas as there are plenty of flicks to check out! Evangeline Lilly once again appears in the final installment of The Hobbit films. So let’s kick it all off with her.

After the jump, the list of overpaid actors, Star Trek is getting fast and furious, Playstation got some issues and Dr. Evil schools everyone on how to run a proper evil organization. Continue reading

Happy Life Day!

We have a little tradition on The Lowdown Blog. Every Christmas we show a Christmas movie on the blog. Everyone has the day off so we’re going to relax too.

One of the great debates at Christmas is how bad A Christmas Story is. It’s not helped by the 24-hour marathons on TBS. But we’re not going to show A Christmas Story today. We’ve got something worse. It’s time for the Star Wars Holiday Special. As bad as A Christmas Story is, it’s shown on TV every year. The Star Wars Holiday Special isn’t.

Worst of Music Retrospective: United States of Pop 2014

While this year was a quiet one for Worst of Music posts on the blog (the only one was Avril Lavigne’s Hello Kitty), that doesn’t mean that there wasn’t a whole pile of bad music this year.

Since most of the internet has gone into year-in-review mode, I thought that we’d do our usual retrospective of the worst music of 2014. But why do I have to do anything when I can use DJ Earworm’s annual mashup of 25 of the top pop hits of the year to recap the year in bad music.

Entertainment Link-Off: Fire Within

lizzy-caplan-elle-canada-3So it looks like everyone will be swarming to the theatres to catch the final installment of The Hobbit in theatres. While most are looking for it to neatly tie up the prequel trilogy, apparently the film has left a lot to be desired. On the other end of the spectrum, people won’t be flocking to see The Interview since it won’t be hitting the theatres anytime soon thanks to hacker threats. In the meantime, I guess you can catch a glimpse of Lizzy Caplan to feel a bit better over not seeing her in the movie.

After the jump, first look at Jessica Chastain in Crimson Peak, Mark Wahlberg is in for more Transformers, news on The Interview getting the rug pulled from right under it, Barack Obama shares his favourite film of 2014, children’s movies can be quite traumatizing and Santa is real! The Hobbit’s Five Armies (Infographic)

hobbit-battle-of-five-armies-infographic-headerA six-movie saga that has spanned thirteen years in cinemas and 77 years since The Hobbit was first published is coming to an end this weekend. Yesterday was the North American release date for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, the last movie in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit dual trilogy.

To celebrate the premiere of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, we have not only a handy infographic with a look at the titular five armies but also an interactive flash graphic with the armies and a map.

By the way, SPOILERS! So many spoilers! Well, I suppose it’s a spoiler if you haven’t read the book.

Entertainment Link-Off: All Good Things…

eliza taylor bello 1To the folks in North America, you can finally catch Exodus: Gods and Kings in theatres this weekend! It’s not a bad flick, but definitely not one of Ridley Scott’s finest. Meanwhile over in TV land, many shows are wrapping up the sweeps with their mid-season finales as they prepare to go on a break for Christmas and New Years. The 100 will air its midseason finale this Wednesday. It’s a good show and it certainly leaves you on edge. It also helps that Eliza Taylor is the star of the show.

After the jump, Harrison Ford likes the Blade Runner 2 script, a bizarre crossover film was in discussion at one point, Bond is going over budget, movie trailers galore and listen to Jimmy Fallon and co. cover a classic song. Continue reading
