NHL Power Rankings: Week 10

We have another swap at the top of the Power Rankings this week. It shouldn’t be unexpected because the Pittsburgh Penguins have won ten straight games heading into last night. I also put two teams that I didn’t expect to make the playoffs into the top ten. And the Leafs still managed to move down in the standings despite winning two games against top Eastern Conference opponents. Just life as usual for the Make Believes. Continue reading

NHL Power Rankings: Week 9

There’s a lot of change in this week’s Power Rankings. We have one team make a huge jump of 15 spots into the top ten while a top five team from last week plummets 14 spots in the rankings. Not surprisingly, though, the bottom five saw very little change in the order. But, once again, a new team reaches the top of the Power Rankings. I’m actually surprised that I’m willing to risk the Power Rankings jinx on these guys too. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Code Breaker

Alright, after the slightly failed late night link experiment, how about I make it up to you with Candice Swanepoel.

I mentioned this in the last edition of the Power Rankings. It’s the unwritten code of hockey finally transcribed. (Down Goes Brown)

The record for the longest hockey shootout was set last week by the Germans. A German league shootout went 21 rounds before they could figure out a winner. (With Leather)

On the one year anniversary of the Tiger Woods crash and associated fallout, here’s a look at some of the events leading up to the crash. (Vanity Fair)

After the jump, a Grey Cup conspiracy, the best inventions of 2010 and Jordan tells LeBron what he should do. Continue reading

NHL Power Rankings: Week 8

Just because it’s Thanksgiving in America doesn’t mean that we don’t have this week’s Power Rankings. Today, all our American readers can be thankful for the NHL and our Power Rankings which has another team on top. When it came to picking the top team of heading into this week, I had two teams in mind but when one topped the other in a shootout, they clinched the top spot in the rankings for the first time this season. Wednesday Link-Off: Higher Education

Since tomorrow is American Thanksgiving, let’s start with Canada’s Laura Vandervoort.

A retiring academic writer-for-hire tells the story of cheating that he aids and in how desperate need for help some people are. (The Chronicle of Higher Education)

We’ve heard all sorts of those stories about high school students sleeping with their teachers and we also knew that it would eventually come to this: A teacher is pregnant thanks to her taboo affair. (ABC News)

Rupert Murdoch’s next step in brainwashing the masses changing the face of journalism: An iPad only newspaper. (Mashable)

After the jump, Hilary Duff will be the next celeb to have nude photos leaked if the internet has taught me anything, balance the US budget and Crosby’s up to some new tricks. Continue reading

NHL Power Rankings: Week 7

Another week, another round of the Power Rankings as we head into the 7th week of the 2010-11 NHL season. I figured that I would have given up by now but people are actually reading this. Actually, if you Google NHL power rankings, we’re the 1st site to come up… Well, at least when I checked on Monday monring before anyone else came out with theirs for the week. It’s a stretch to say that we can be mentioned in the same breath as TSN, CBC, ESPN, Sportsnet and Yahoo but if we’re occasionally number one in Google’s NHL Power Rankings Power Rankings, I’ll take it. Mind you, on Tuesday we were on the second page so I can’t really gloat. Anyhow, we have a familiar face at the top of this week’s rankings. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Discipline

Let’s kick off these links with Canada’s own Jessica Lowndes who celebrated her 22nd birthday with cupcakes.

With the CFL regular season in the books and division finals coming up this weekend, here’s a look at the five best and worst moments from this season. (55-Yard Line)

In the midst of a labour relations case that the NHL is involved in, several emails from Colin Campbell were made public. In one of them, he refers to one of the players he coached as a “little fake artist.” So who is this guy he loathes so much? (MC79 Hockey)

And speaking of NHL discipline, here’s Sean Avery cheapshotting Ladislav Smid. Doubt he’ll get suspended because Campbell likes the Rangers. (Tirico Suave)

After the jump, Brett Favre’s hypothetical benching, everybody does the Dougie and the return of DJ Steve Porter. Continue reading

NHL Power Rankings: Week 6

For the second week running, there’s a new team a top the Power Rankings. Finally, my faith in one goalie (and his team) has paid off and they’ve assumed top spot in the NHL and The Lowdown Power Rankings. Along with the top spot, just about every other slot in the rankings changed hands as early season hot and cold streaks sort themselves out and we get a clearer picture of who are contenders and who are pretenders this season. Continue reading

NHL Power Rankings: Week 5

The first month of the NHL season is in the books and we’re no closer to separating the pretenders from the contenders. What we do know is that the Kings and Lightning are contending teams this season. The Devils, Sabres and Senators, on the other hand, have done complete 180s from last season. One thing that hasn’t been settled yet is who won the Halak trade but I’ve ranked one team ahead of the other in each rankings list. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Kick It

Let’s kickoff this edition of the Wednesday links with old favourite Gina Carano.

This video has made the rounds on the internet but let’s lead off with it here. It’s the wild finish to Friday’s CFL game between Montreal and Toronto. (55-Yard Line)

The extensive and exhaustive pre-game shows of the NFL is what sets it apart from the CFL (among other things). However, most of the time, the hosts laugh like they’re high. (Wall Street Journal) Seriously, whoever voted against Prop 19 in California must watch the NFL on Fox pre-game show.

The NHL is trying to cut down on hits to the head. The German Hockey League? They’re trying to sell the game with gratuitous amounts of violence. (With Leather)

After the jump, golfers settling differences with swords, California vs. Video Games and How to be an NHL Defenceman. Continue reading
