A History of The Avengers (Infographic)

One thing that often happens when comic book movies come out is that fans will compare the comics to the movies. Sometimes, the comparisons are favourable. Sometimes, less so. I’d like to think that the likes of The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy were better movies than the comics. Spider-Man and the later X-Men movies, on the other hand, should probably have stuck to print.

Anyway, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a very limited number of Avengers through the first two movies. That’s in direct contrast to the never ending members of the Avengers throughout the years in the Marvel Comicverse, including to this very day. To see who is and has been part of the Avengers through the years, we have a handy little infographic for you.

Movie Cars You Can Drive (Infographic)

If you’re in the GTA and watched the news, read the paper or been anywhere downtown, you’re well aware that the 40th Toronto International Film Festival opened up last weekend. I’ve actually been lucky enough to catch a couple of movies (Freeheld and Guantanamo’s Child: Omar Khadr) and will have reviews coming up in the next little bit.

To celebrate the launch of TIFF 2015, we were sent a handy little infographic that explores some of the most famous cars in cinema history. If ever you wanted to know about the history, price and specs of some of the best cars in the history of movies.

The Meaning of Lightsaber Colours (Infographic)

Fans of the Star Wars movies know that there are four colours for lightsabers. The Jedi primarily use blue and green saber blades with Mace Windy rocking a purple saber. The Sith use their trademark red. If you’re fans of the Star Wars expanded universe of novels, comics and games, you could have another seven saber blade colours, each with their own meanings.

So as we continue our march to the December premiere of The Force Awakens, here’s a handy infographic that looks at the meaning of the colour of lightsabers.

The Evolution of Star Wars Prequel Costumes (Infographic)

With a new trilogy of Star Wars sequels upcoming starting this December, it’s time for us to look at the prequels! Wait… What?

The folks over at HalloweenCostumes.com are probably doing a build-up to The Force Awakens so nobody panic. Other than Revenge of the Sith and the Episode One: Racer video game, I’m not sure that anybody is going to be doing too much celebrating of the prequels. That being said, they do have a fun little look at the evolution of the costume design of the big three characters from the prequel trilogy. Even if some of the dialogue, story and CGI were shaky, the movies were certainly visual tours de force.

The Economics of Star Wars (Infographic)

Star Wars is a tale of good vs. evil, the little man against the oppressive regime, and how self-belief begets shrewd negotiations that allowed the creator to retain the rights to sequels, merchandising and a significant portion of the box office gross.

Okay, Star Wars isn’t so much about the last point but that doesn’t mean that a little sci-fi movie that no studio really believed in didn’t become the poster child for the mega movie franchise. Star Wars (AKA Episode IV: A New Hope) was made for a tiny $14 million. It made over $775 million at the box office and nearly double that when adjusted for inflation. That’s just one of the cool facts about the dollars and cents of Star Wars we have for you in this handy infographic.

The Best Car Chases in Movie History (Infographic)

Who doesn’t love a good car chase in a movie? Apparently, most of the movie going public loves car chases too based on how much money Furious 7 made at the box office. But for all the money that Furious 7 and the Fast and the Furious franchise has made, you wouldn’t consider them to have any iconic car chases.

The folks over at TitleMax had a look at great movie car chases through the years and didn’t pick anything to examine that hit theatres beyond 1981. Maybe practical effects should be the norm in car movies and not CGI cars jumping between skyscrapers in the Middle East. Not that I’m calling out any particular movie.

Entertainment Link-Off: Awaken

anna-kendrick-glamouruk15-06Hello Saturday crew. Steve in for Jackie this week. I certainly lucked into a good week to cover the entertainment beat. Between a new Star Wars trailer, a new Batman v Superman trailer, news for both movies and Gwyneth Paltrow’s food stamp experiment, this was an entertaining week to be a fan of entertainment and pop culture. Oh, I almost forgot that Game of Thrones premiered this week. We might have reviewed this week’s episode.

Anyway, it’s time to cut the preamble and get down to business with this week’s Entertainment Link-Off. Since we have a few links about her in here, let’s kick this post off with Anna Kendrick.

Entertainment Link-Off: Valentine’s Surprise

anna-kendrick-thelastfiveyears15-04Hello, entertainment links fans. Steve here in for Jackie. While Jackie is dealing with the arduous task of hot Australian summer weather, I’m taking a break from shoveling snow to take care of the ELO this week. He’s lucky I didn’t show up at his front door unannounced. Since Tuesday, I’ve dug out from over a foot of snow. Jackie? The worst that’s happened to him is turning the air conditioning down a degree because it got a wee bit nippy. Yes, I’m incredibly bitter about winter and no, I don’t intend to complain about 40° weather this summer.

Anyway, it’s Saturday night and it’s time for the links. No, I don’t have a lot of Valentine’s themed links today which is the surprise. Okay, that’s a terrible surprise but there’s TV, movie and celebrity gossip news for your perusal today. But for something Valentine-ish, let’s start with The Lowdown’s official celebrity crush Anna Kendrick.

Entertainment Link-Off: Newsbeat

Hello folks. I don’t want to cause a panic but I’ve drawn in for Jackie this week. He’s off to the Melbourne International Film Festival this weekend. Hopefully he has a few reviews and quick thoughts on some of the movies he sees this weekend. As we know from his 2013 Brisbane International Film Festival coverage, he certainly gets his money worth at these festivals.

So it’s time for this week’s best links from the worlds of entertainment and pop culture. We have more about the death of Robin Williams, the juxtaposition of a new release and the protests in Ferguson, and more TV and movie news.

First, since The Expendables 3 premieres this weekend, here’s new star Ronda Rousey. Hopefully we eventually get her female Expendables movie.
