We have another swap at the top of the Power Rankings this week. It shouldn’t be unexpected because the Pittsburgh Penguins have won ten straight games heading into last night. I also put two teams that I didn’t expect to make the playoffs into the top ten. And the Leafs still managed to move down in the standings despite winning two games against top Eastern Conference opponents. Just life as usual for the Make Believes. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Snowed In
To warm you up on a cold day in most parts of Canada, here’s Arianny Celeste.
For the third straight day today, the University of Western Ontario is closed for a snow day. There’s been one snow day over the last five years so UWO students might struggle to think of things to do today. Fortunately, our pals at LDU have some suggestions to pass the time. (Lion’s Den U)
Gawker is changing the look of their blogs again. It looks like the beginning of a revolution of how you read blogs. (Sports Journalism)
Don Cherry was invited to give a speech to introduce new Toronto mayor Rob Ford to city council. What we got was a legendary speech. It’s so epic that a transcription was on the web within minutes. (Torontoist)
After the jump, the Sidney Crosby Christmas hockey card, Wolfenstein’s back (sorta) and a Taiwanese CGI news montage. Continue reading
NHL Power Rankings: Week 9
There’s a lot of change in this week’s Power Rankings. We have one team make a huge jump of 15 spots into the top ten while a top five team from last week plummets 14 spots in the rankings. Not surprisingly, though, the bottom five saw very little change in the order. But, once again, a new team reaches the top of the Power Rankings. I’m actually surprised that I’m willing to risk the Power Rankings jinx on these guys too. Continue reading
The Best of Don Cherry’s Wardrobe
There’s no more polarizing figure in hockey than Don Cherry. The former Jack Adams Award winner as the NHL’s Coach of the Year translated a short time as coach of the Boston Bruins into a broadcast career that has made him a Canadian icon. He was even voted one of the ten greatest Canadians of all-time. That was despite his often controversial views on Europeans in the NHL, fighting’s place in hockey and the helmet visor. But even more famous than his view points is his wardrobe. Grapes’ attire is the stuff of legend across Canada. While it’s often horrible, it’s always memorable. So on this Black Friday, here are some of the more memorable items in Don Cherry’s wardrobe. Continue reading
NHL Power Rankings: Week 8
Just because it’s Thanksgiving in America doesn’t mean that we don’t have this week’s Power Rankings. Today, all our American readers can be thankful for the NHL and our Power Rankings which has another team on top. When it came to picking the top team of heading into this week, I had two teams in mind but when one topped the other in a shootout, they clinched the top spot in the rankings for the first time this season. Continue reading
NHL Power Rankings: Week 7
Another week, another round of the Power Rankings as we head into the 7th week of the 2010-11 NHL season. I figured that I would have given up by now but people are actually reading this. Actually, if you Google NHL power rankings, we’re the 1st site to come up… Well, at least when I checked on Monday monring before anyone else came out with theirs for the week. It’s a stretch to say that we can be mentioned in the same breath as TSN, CBC, ESPN, Sportsnet and Yahoo but if we’re occasionally number one in Google’s NHL Power Rankings Power Rankings, I’ll take it. Mind you, on Tuesday we were on the second page so I can’t really gloat. Anyhow, we have a familiar face at the top of this week’s rankings. Continue reading
NHL Power Rankings: Week 6
For the second week running, there’s a new team a top the Power Rankings. Finally, my faith in one goalie (and his team) has paid off and they’ve assumed top spot in the NHL and The Lowdown Power Rankings. Along with the top spot, just about every other slot in the rankings changed hands as early season hot and cold streaks sort themselves out and we get a clearer picture of who are contenders and who are pretenders this season. Continue reading
Sunday Link-Off: Too Damn High
Since I massacred yesterday’s entertainment links, how about I make it up to you with Candice Swanepoel?
The Dongslinger saga carries on. Now AJ Daulerio is fielding questions from journalism students over it. He handles himself well, though. (Sports Journalism)
The WHL isn’t what I would call “minor league” hockey but sometimes they dream up gimmicks like a standard minor league club. The Saskatoon Blades are wearing denim jacket-style jerseys for an upcoming game. (Sportress of Blogitude)
And speaking of minor league gimmicks, the KHL has a new idea to promote the league. They’re holding a contest (in conjunction with Playboy) where female fans send in swimsuit pictures and write why they love their KHL team. Makes perfect sense to me. (Puck Daddy)
After the jump, Top Gear finds a new Stig, the 100 best mustaches in sports history, and the Rent Is Too Damn High. Continue reading
NHL Power Rankings: Week 5
The first month of the NHL season is in the books and we’re no closer to separating the pretenders from the contenders. What we do know is that the Kings and Lightning are contending teams this season. The Devils, Sabres and Senators, on the other hand, have done complete 180s from last season. One thing that hasn’t been settled yet is who won the Halak trade but I’ve ranked one team ahead of the other in each rankings list. Continue reading
NHL Power Rankings: Week 4
It’s time for our second dose of the weekly Lowdown power rankings of NHL teams. We’ve got a new team atop the rankings because the Caps forgot how to score and save. The Central Division isn’t on top but they control the Top Ten. And the Leafs are who we thought they were. It really is a good week to be objectively rating hockey teams against each other. Continue reading
