The History of Canadian Thanksgiving (Infographic)

Today is Thanksgiving in Canada. Obviously, it’s on a different day and month than our neighbours to the south who have theirs on the fourth Thursday in November. Ours is on the second Monday of October. But it wasn’t always on Monday or even in October. In fact, Thanksgiving in Canada has been in April, May, June and November before being an October holiday. So to celebrate our Thanksgiving, here’s an infographic with the history of Canadian Thanksgiving. Continue reading

The Humanoids: New and Improved Flavour

With the return of summer, I figured that July was a good time for the return of The Humanoids column. I’ve been trying to figure out what’s been missing from the blog and I’m selfishly thinking that my rants are part of it. Well, I’ve decided to revive The Humanoids with a new format. The format is more question-based than topic-based so I can go on a few more tangents than I used to. Will this new format actually get some traction? The only way to find out is to hit the jump. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Fireworks

Did you know that tomorrow is Independence Day? Well, since this is a Canadian blog, let’s kick of with some non-American eye candy. We’ve got a treat for the Yanks tomorrow, though. In the meantime, here’s British WAG and model Abbey Clancy.

We all know sports owners try to cry poor but is it all just show? Deadspin found some old New Jersey Nets financial statements and examine how they exaggerate their loss. (Deadspin)

But sometimes losses are a result of the product on the field. Take the Toronto Blue Jays who’ve been out of the post-season hunt for almost 20 years. (Grantland)

And speaking of baseball and losses, Charlie Sheen is back in the news. In an interview, he says that he took steroids while filming Major League and his fastball gained 5 MPH. (Sports Illustrated)

After the jump, wrestling is real to Jim Rome, Costas and Michaels get reunited and blowing up bridges. Continue reading

25 More Reasons to Love Canada

Here at The Lowdown Blog, we love our country. Not only that but we love the women of Canada. I might be a bit biased but I think that Canadian women are the greatest in the world. Since I know the Yanks will be promoting their finest on Independence Day, to celebrate Canada Day here’s another look at 25 of the hottest Canadian women. Happy Canada Day! Continue reading

F1 Power Rankings: Canadian Grand Prix

It’s time for my favourite race of the Formula One World Championship. The F1 circus makes its only stop of the season in North America this weekend for the Canadian Grand Prix. This is largely homerism but the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is one of today’s great Grand Prix circuits. Regardless of the fact that it’s part street circuit and part dedicated race track, it always produces an exciting and unpredictable event. Maybe that’s what some folks need to knock Sebastian Vettel off the top step of the podium. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Long Gone

For no real reason, here’s Paraguayan javelin thrower (SI Swimsuit model) Leryn Franco. In case you cared, this photo shoot was in Banff.

It’s been 10 years since the Vancouver Grizzles left Canada to go to Memphis… And still be called the Grizzlies. Anyway, here’s what some of your favourite Van Griz players have been upto in the meantime. (Vancouver Sun)

How big is the Mike Fisher trade? Even the Wall Street Journal looked at it and the Ottawa fans likening Carrie Underwood to Yoko Ono. (Wall Street Journal)

Top rated NBA prospect and Ohio State Buckeye Jared Sullinger became a viral hit when his off-key rendition of Party in the USA hit YouTube. Well, fans at Purdue heard it too and thought they should serenade him. (The Dagger)

After the jump, the making of a minute of Dead Space 2, how Google is revolutionizing the web browser again and the new Charles Barkley song. Continue reading

F1 Canadian GP: Summer Blockbuster

While Hollywood comes out with movies that are action packed from start to finish and full of crashes and smashes, the Formula One circus decided to stage their own summer blockbuster in Montreal. The Canadian Grand Prix is always a wild affair but this year’s seemed crazier than usual. There was more action crammed into the first seven laps of the race than the first seven races of the season combined. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: It’s Our Game

She may not have been nominated for an award but Elizabeth Banks was a winner at the Oscars in my books.

In the greatest feature written about the Olympic men’s hockey game of the century, the main players breakdown the final four seconds of the game fraction of a second by fraction of a second. (Toronto Star)

Canada (or at least Edmonton) has its priorities straight. During the gold medal hockey game, folks only when to the bathroom during the intermissions. (Pat’s Papers)

If you’re involved in Italian Serie A soccer, don’t blaspheme. It got Jesus crucified and a manager a touchline ban. (Goal)

After the jump, a Stephen Brunt column, dumb celebrity lawsuits, and The Three Stooges. Continue reading

The Humanoids: The Long and Short of It

On this week’s Humanoids, it’s more bang for your buck. Not quite the usual nine targets but as much written about them as if it was nine. It’s been an interesting last seven days in Canada. We threw the biggest party in the history of the world and we even held the Olympics out in Vancouver. Heroes were born, legacies were crafted, and the podium was owned. And after the great Canadian coming out party, it’s back to the status quo. We Canadians will move on with our quiet, self-deprecating lives while the rest of the world ignores us. But for this week, let’s hold onto the fun we’ve had for the last couple of weeks and look back. Continue reading
