Sunday Link-Off: Media Madness

The theme of this edition of the Sunday links is how bad the sports media is becoming. Most of them can be taken as seriously as the “broadcast journalists” of the WWE. And I forced that analogy in there so I could run this photo of WWE “Diva” Kelly Kelly.

The greatest fictional detective of all-time is making a comeback between TV and movies. Along the way, he’s gained legions of fans and here’s the history of Holmes and his fans. (The Awl)

Keeping with writing, social media isn’t killing hockey journalism but hockey media trying to make everything more like Twitter is killing it. (Globe and Mail)

True story: The last time I tried to order an Old Fashioned, the bartender didn’t know what it was so he couldn’t serve it. He should read this history to the Old Fashioned which is one of my favourite cocktails. (Slate)

After the jump, more awful sports media, the life of a potato chip chef, and a cool Goodfellas homage. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: A Train Wreck

I’ve drawn in to cover the entertainment beat for Jackie this week. Unfortunately for you guys, I didn’t remember until this morning that I was supposed to do this post. Anyway, Jackie would normally start by talking about this weekend’s new movies but your options are Tower Heist which looks Razzie-worthy and Harold and Kumar 3D which looks awesome. Unfortunately for the ladies, I’m not going to lead this post off with the great NPH. So let’s kickoff with the leading lady of last week’s big release, The Rum Diary, Amber Heard.

Today in ridiculously odd and disturbing celebrity news, the A-List director who masturbated while eating shrimp in front of Olivia Munn that she noted in her autobiography came forward. It’s the intelligence destroying Brett Ratner. (Film Drunk)

After the jump, career ending performances, Eddie Murphy’s career arc and Trebek tells you to suck on it. Continue reading

The Humanoids: Don’t Hate The Player

It’s been an interesting week in the world. Two sports figures caught some major flak for their Halloween costumes. Another sports figure got divorced. And 12-year-olds have cemented their control over Twitter while their hero gets dragged into his first real scandal. It’s almost the status quo. But no one ever said that the status quo was always boring. Continue reading

The History of Digital Storage (Infographic)

Did you know that it’s been 64 years since the first digital storage device was invented? The Williams Tube was invented in 1947 and had about 64 bytes of data storage. We’ve come a long way since then. Computer hard drives now routinely measure in terabytes of storage capacity. But how did we get here? This infographic explains the evolution of digital storage. The Best of Occupy Tebow

The revolution will not be televised but rather posted on the internet. The media has been championing Tim Tebow as a great winner and essentially promoting him as the second coming for the Denver Broncos. His first start this season was 57 minutes of poor play followed by a comeback. His second start was utter garbage. Only then the media figured out that Tebow wasn’t the be all and end all of quarterbacks. Now, the people have taken to the ESPN comments section on an anti-Tebow article to show what they really think of Tebow.

Hit the jump for 30 of the best comments from Occupy Tebow and find out what really is greater than Tebow. Continue reading

Not News: November 2, 2011

A man caught having sex with a donkey told a court in Zimbabwe the animal was actually a prostitute who turned into a donkey. The man was found performing a sex act on a donkey who was lying next to a tree and used the transformation defence when brought to court. He also claimed that he was also a donkey because he was madly in love with the prostitute come donkey. If Zimbabwe is an “innocent until proven guilty” society, the prosecution will have a hell of a time disproving that defence.

Wednesday Link-Off: Halloween Hangover

Halloween’s over for another year and it was a bit more interesting than usual. Anyway, let’s kick off the first linkdump written on the new layout with new Guess model Julia Lescova.

The 1% might say that they’ve earned their wealth but they sure aren’t doing anything to earn themselves any sympathy. For example, a law firm’s Halloween party featured all employees dressed as the recently foreclosed. (New York Times)

One of the best Halloween traditions is the annual Simpsons Treehouse of Horrors special. Here is a ranking of all segments over the last 22 years. (SplitSider) Really, any from Treehouse V could’ve been #1 so this is one of the seldom seen good choices for #1.

Shaq has a new book coming out soon. Some of the released excerpts explain why he and Kobe hate each other. (Deadspin)

After the jump, Kim and Kris are no more, more leftover Halloween links and the FNL Emmy trailer. Continue reading
