The Death of the Arcade Sports Game
Growing up, I got an NES when I was about four or five years old. I had that console all the way until I was 11. Naturally, I logged a lot of hours on the dozen or so games that I did have for that system. Perhaps no game got put through its paces like Blades of Steel. I wasn’t the only one who did, though. Hockey fans all know about the classic game that had hitting everywhere, slap shots ricocheting off the boards and more than a few fights.
If you’re a child of the 90s, it might not have been Blades of Steel but there was certainly a classic sports game that was simple yet fun that you poured hours into. Football fans had Tecmo Super Bowl. Basketball fans spent their time on fire playing NBA Jam.
But look at the sports games released now. How many noteworthy sports game releases are what could be described as arcade-y? Not since 2010’s remake/updated NBA Jam released on the Wii have we had a new arcade-style sports game that wasn’t kart racer. It certainly seems as though a genre that has spawned quite a few cult hits is now all but dead.
Sunday Link-Off: In the News
It’s the end of another week which means it’s time for some of our favourite links from around the interweb. Let’s start today’s link with Elisha Cuthbert. Maxim just named her the hottest woman on TV (or something like that). Score one for Canada.
You might think that the Russian meteor suggests that we need a better meteor impact detection system but that’s just not possible. (Wired)
When CBS dropped the Early Show for This Morning, the idea was to give hard news a spot on morning TV. It’s not gaining traction against the fluff on ABC and NBC but I like the idea. (Los Angeles Times)
Speaking of fluff, for the February 14th broadcast day, CNN dedicated 758 minutes to the stranded Carnival cruise ship. That’s 52% of all minutes of that day. If you use a low estimate of only 25% of the day being dedicated to commercials, that’s about 70% of actual broadcast time dedicated to one non-story. (BuzzFeed)
After the jump, a goalie gets his revenge, the NYT profiles Mrs. Coach and yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker. Continue reading
Entertainment Link-Off: Yippe Ki-Yay WTF
Looks like a weekend of rotten films at the silver screens. Normally I would plug A Good Day to Die Hard, but word has it, the film is a major step back compared to all the past Die Hard films. Well, I guess you could check out Beautiful Creatures, but not for the storyline though. It’s for the eye candy… namely Emmy Rossum.
After the jump, some progress on Hunger Games flicks, new interesting concept art for Pacific Rim, watch the special hilarious special of Between Two Ferns, watch Vin Diesel belt out one of Rihanna’s tunes and watch Wreck It Ralph in live action! Continue reading
The Best of Zero Punctuation
If you ask people who watch video game reviews on the internet who their favourite reviewer is, the answer that you’re most likely to hear is Yahtzee. They’re not talking about the board game that involves a plastic cup and dice. They probably mean Ben “Yahtzee” Crawshaw, video game developer tuned snarky video game critic.
His video review series, titled Zero Punctuation, are the most popular videos on The Escapist Magazine’s YouTube channel and among the most popular games reviews on YouTube. So for today’s best of the interweb, we have Yahtzee’s ten most popular reviews. Continue reading

A couple of years ago, I took a look at some of the internet’s creepiest fan art of celebrities. Well, if you thought the various collages and drawings that fans put together were creepy, they have nothing on what the folks on YouTube have cooked up. There are some almost disturbing videos that fans create and post.

Wednesday Link-Off: State of the Union
Alright, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue came out yesterday and Kate Upton was on the cover. That means that we are sort of obligated to feature her today.
A day after I give Esquire a hard time over its content over on et geekera, they turn around and do a pretty good profile of the man who shot Osama bin Laden. (Esquire)
One of the big stories to come out that Esquire profile is the state of benefits for veterans. Regardless of what the truth is for the shooter, Obamacare is still a good deal. (Wonkblog)
Last night’s GOP response to the State of the Union was made by Marco Rubio. Is he the future of the Republican Party? (Washington Post)

Formula One: 2013 Jerez Test Recap
Formula One is back in action for another year with the start of pre-season testing. The first of 2013’s tests was at Spain’s Jerez Circuit which doesn’t host a race on the Grand Prix calendar so the teams and drivers weren’t putting much stock in the results. In fact, Fernando Alonso couldn’t even be bothered to show up to this test. That didn’t mean that Ferrari wasn’t fast last week, though. Continue reading
