Inspired by the Globe and Mail’s caption writing person, we waste our time writing funny picture captions for some of the more interesting photos we come across when blogging. So here are some of the best pictures from the past week with a funny (-ish) caption. Continue reading
The Best of F My Life
It’s time for another part in our ongoing series in the best of the interweb that can help you through your day. We haven’t looked at the best of the hilariously depressing stories of F My Life since last year so let’s make up for it now. After all, it’s the best site to go to for stories that make your life seem just that little bit better because it could be so much worse.
The Best of Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas 2013
Barrett-Jackson only runs four of its world-famous collector car auctions each year. The final auction is one of its newer ones. This weekend is Barrett-Jackson’s 6th annual Las Vegas auction which appropriately takes place on The Strip at the Mandalay Bay Resort.
Every year, millions of people drop billions of dollars in casinos looking to win the big jackpot. At Barrett-Jackson, car buyers will spend millions of dollars hoping to hit the jackpot by buying the car of their dreams or a collector car that will increase in value. So here are five of my favourite cars from this week’s auction that will be a cool ride for the lucky buyer that hits the auction block jackpot.
Join The 2013-14 Lowdown Blog Fantasy Hockey Pool
It’s time once again for the annual Lowdown Blog Fantasy Hockey Pool. As per usual, we’ve created our fantasy hockey league over on the TSN/ESPN fantasy website. It’s a public pool so anyone can join. If we run out of space in the pool, we’ll create extra pools to get readers a pool for the year. And we’ll be doing the head-to-head writer challenge again this year where we laugh at how bad I am at fantasy hockey where PIM is a stat.
It’s a head-to-head league with the winner of each match-up based on winning the most of the nine categories (G, A, +/-, PIM, SOG, STP [Special Teams Points], Wins, GAA, SV%) in play kinda like the old Yahoo pools we all used to play. Each team has 20 roster spots with nine forwards, four defensemen and two goalies starting each night.
The autopick draft takes place at 5:00 AM on Monday, September 30, so sign up now and set your picks.

Wednesday Link-Off: Book It
Later today, we’ve post the link to this year’s Lowdown Hockey Pool. As always, it’s for bragging rights but who doesn’t like a little friendly competition. Anyway, it’s time for the link. Let’s start with Tina Fey who picked up an Emmy for 30 Rock earlier this week.
It’s not just the Democrats and economists who think that playing chicken with the debt ceiling is hurting the economy. Bush 42’s budget director thinks that political gamesmanship with the debt ceiling hurts the economy. (Washington Post)
Here’s a slightly heartwarming story about a gunman in the Kenyan shopping mall attack freeing a family after a four-year-old boy told him that he was a bad man. (The Independent)
The folks at the Louisville Courier-Journal clearly don’t watch The Newsroom because they printed a letter to the editor from a character using a direct quote from the show. (Mediaite)
How Much is the TMNT’s Sewer Lair Worth?
Have you ever been interested in prime sewer real estate? Okay, I haven’t either. But if you’re a turtle trained in the ancient art of the ninja, you might want somewhere underground to use as a headquarters when you fight crime. Sure, Master Splinter probably had squatters rights on his and the turtles’ abode but how much would it cost you to take it off their hands…Or whatever turtles have?
F1 Singapore Grand Prix: This is Why NASCAR Fabricates Cautions
The Formula One World Championship may have left Europe but the change of scenery doesn’t mean that there has been a change at the head of the field. Sebastian Vettel dominated the weekend and the race with such a dominant win that you almost wonder if everyone else ran GP2 cars this weekend instead of F1 cars.
Sunday Link-Off: Check the Media
We’re working for the weekend. If you are, you can check out today’s edition of the links. Let’s kick off with Talita Correa who is another of the multitude of models from Brazil. I really need to get down there at some point in my life.
As unfortunately tends to be the case with tragedies, the media is more interested in being first with their news rather than being right. Just ask Rollie Chance who was incorrectly identified as the shooter by numerous outlets. (Washington Post)
Speaking of being first rather than right, a BuzzFeed writer was so keen to say that guns stop mass shootings that he neglected to include facts in his article. (Mother Jones)
The GOP are trying desperately to defund Obamacare but don’t seem to have the facts straight. Then again, the Dems aren’t too much better. Check out this fact checking of the Affordable Care Act before you pick a side. (FactCheck)
Entertainment Link-Off: Driven
After several rotten weeks we get some fresh flicks at the theatres this weekend. You can catch the cat and mouse thriller in the film Prisoners starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal. If you prefer something that features a bit of fast car action with some drama involved, then there’s Rush, based on the true story of James Hunt. That film features Chris Hemsworth, but you can also catch Olivia Wilde in the film as well.
After the jump, big sales for GTA V, looking forward to HIMYM season 9, the Terminator might be tackling Avatar, Sam Jackson is a great role model, and watch the next animated film pitch at Disney HQ. Continue reading
