Olympic Fails of the Week

While yesterday I said that I’m boycotting the Sochi Olympics, I believe that pointing out all that is wrong with the Sochi Olympics is in keeping with the spirit of the boycott. I’m not interested in supporting these Olympics or embarrassing the athletes. I’m interested in undermining the Sochi Organizing Committee’s efforts to make Russia look good in the eyes of the world when it should be looked down upon with scorn.

So here are five pictures and tweets of Sochi Olympic fails.

Why I’m Boycotting the Sochi Olympics

sochi-olympic-boycott-headerThere was seldom a moment during the London Olympics that I was tuned away from live broadcasts, especially during handball. I was one of the two-thirds of Canadians who watched Sidney Crosby end the Vancouver Olympics with an overtime goal to win the men’s hockey gold medal.

This time, I won’t be watching. I don’t care if Patrick Chan sets another world record in figure skating or Canada plays Russia for the gold medal in a game that goes to overtime. I won’t be watching my Winter X-Games favourites, slopestyle and halfpipe, or the curlers from my hometown battle for gold.

While the Olympics are supposed to be about coming together, the spirit of unity, and a celebration of sport and national pride, none of that is on display in Sochi. The Russian government, Sochi Olympic organizing committee and the International Olympic Committee have created an Olympic games that does none of that and I want no part of these Olympics.

The Best of Don Cherry’s Wardrobe

Love him or hate him, the biggest name in the Canadian hockey media is none other than Donald S. Cherry. Grapes has been a mainstay on Hockey Night in Canada for over 30 years, both in the broadcast booth and in his famous Coach’s Corner segment.

Since Grapes just celebrated 80th birthday on Wednesday (in Russia, no less), I thought it was only fitting to pay tribute to him for his most infamous of features – his wardrobe.

F1 Fails of the Week

Last week, we looked at the some of the rather odd-looking 2014 Formula One cars. This week, we take a look at what the best F1 photoshoppers have done with those terrible cars. At least the unique looking cars provide for a variety of photoshop opportunities.

Formula One: 2014 Jerez Test Recap

The 2014 Formula One season doesn’t kickoff properly for another month-and-a-half but pre-season testing starts early as the teams try to get their heads around new engines, new energy recovery systems (ERS) and a new rules package for the cars. From the looks of last week’s test in Jerez, some teams are going to need all the time they can get to get sorted for this season.

F1 Fails of the Week

Formula One teams have started unveiling their 2014 challengers ahead of the upcoming winter pre-season tests. There is a big shift in technical regulations for the upcoming year with smaller front wings, lower noses and revised cooling packages required for the new turbo V6 engines.

The first few cars unveiled aren’t exactly confidence inspiring. In fact, some of them are hilarious and ugly looking. So here are some F1 design fails. And you thought stepped nosed were bad.

F1 December News Roundup: All the Rules Changes You Have

It’s only been three weeks since we last did a Formula One post but given the news from last week, I think we’re definitely due. Last week, the FIA announced some new rules for the 2014 and 2015 seasons and I believe that they’ve earned themselves some rants with their decisions.

F1 Brazilian Grand Prix: One For the Record Books

The 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix was the end of an era. The V8s were going to be running their last race. Mark Webber was to retire after the race to go run sports cars. And Sebastian Vettel was set to break yet another record. And all of that happened. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the storybook ending for Webber as his teammate picked up his 9th straight win.

F1 Power Rankings: Brazilian Grand Prix

We’ve reached the final race of the 2013 Formula One World Championship and it’s the end of an era. Not only are the old 2.4-litre naturally aspirated V8s on their way out after eight years but so is @AussieGrit Mark Webber after twelve seasons at the top-level of motorsport. Given that it’s Webber’s final Formula One Grand Prix, I thought that it was only fitting that I bumped him up from #2 in the Power Rankings to #1.

Formula One United States GP: German/Austrian Two-Step

Coming into this weekend’s race, there were only two races on the current Formula One calendar where victory eluded Sebastian Vettel. One is Hungary and he won’t get a chance to rectify that for another eight months. The other is the United States Grand Prix which he only had two attempts at winning.

Well, actually, you can change that to the United States Grand Prix was one of the few races he hadn’t won after absolutely dominating the second running of an F1 Grand Prix in Austin.
