Lowdown Radio Classic: February 3, 2009

It’s an all-time great episode of The Lowdown radio show for today’s classic episode post. And after we weren’t on air last Tuesday, we need to pull out an all-timer to make up for the “pre-emption.” This vintage episode was the second annual Valentine’s special. The show starts with Steve and Jackie hitting Richmond Row to try out pickup lines. That doesn’t end well for them. Especially Steve. Then they try a musical feature called “Love Songs That Aren’t Really Love Songs But Kinda Are.” The news deals all with sex. Jackie and Steve previewed two bad songs during the entertainment segment. After the break, Steve recaps Winter Homecoming at UWO which was really just a trumped up way for the USC to promote the Jack Frost Cup hockey game and make money off it. The show wraps up with Jackie giving a cooking lesson and Steve trying to hijack it with his own cooking tips. It’s one of the top five best episodes in Lowdown history and just time to help you out for Valentine’s Day.

Lowdown Extra: February 2, 2010

The Lowdown radio show was supposed to air tonight but was pre-empted for reasons beyond our control. So what was originally supposed to be the Valentine’s and USC Election special was pulled from the radio lineup and made a Lowdown Extra exclusive podcast. Tonight’s show starts with Steve and his special guest co-host exploring dating advice in popular music. They also look at different words that mean pretty. Though that is sidetracked with a series of very random discussions that range from profanities that can be used on the radio to crazy stories. The news is the old standby classic of stories of love gone wrong. Entertainment features Young Money winning the coveted Worst of Music prize. And it’s a double dip on It Came From YouTube. It starts with a rock mashup of Pants on the Ground followed by Conan O’Brien and company covering the hit Free Bird. And yes, we play the whole damn thing. After the break, it’s hockey talk with an actual hockey player. It’s a look at violence in the game. There’s a lot of great insight on how suspensions are actually doled out by leagues. All this and more is covered on this web-exclusive Lowdown Extra that runs for over an hour-and-a-half. It’s 94 minutes more of entertainment than you would have had if we weren’t so hell-bent on revolutionizing talk radio.

Lowdown Radio Classic: November 28, 2006

This classic radio show was an episode of the Lowdown in all but name. It’s the first ever time that Steve and Jackie appeared on the same show. This radio show was part of the short-lived Utility Men podcast series that Steve was a co-host of. The show starts with an explanation of the technical difficulties that force Steve to go it alone. During the show, Steve talks about some of the big stories in the world of hockey. Then he recaps the previous week’s NFL action and tells a lot of bad jokes during his recap. There’s even an extremely rare look at the problems with NCAA football. He even manages to squeeze in some quick J.P. Riccardi bashing which was just as much in 2006 as it was in 2009. The show caps off with the first ever CHRW appearance of The Lowdown’s own Mr. Jackie Ho to talk about more hockey. At the time it was recorded, it was the longest podcast in CHRW history. Since then, The Lowdown Extra has passed this podcast five times but Steve and Jackie paved the way for The Extra with this podcast.

Lowdown Radio: January 19, 2010

The Lowdown was on the air tonight without Jackie for the first time. Steve drafted in The Enge as Jackie’s replacement and the pair didn’t miss a beat. The show started with the return of the opinion segment called WTF. Steve took the opportunity to sound off on the poor quality of dental hygenists following a pre-show visit to the dentist that cost him pints of blood. That’s followed up with a listener email about Steve and Jackie’s poor Olympic roster preview. The guys then talk about the favourites for the Olympic hockey tournament. The news deals with Law and Order. With no Jackie to give us a single, Steve replaces it with the worst of music followed by It Came From YouTube. After the commerical break, the guys talk about Alex Burrows’ persecution complex and name the NHL’s halfway award winners. It’s a change of pace as far as hosts are concerned but the same old Lowdown insanity as far as the show is concerned.

On the Extra, there’s more of everything. The WTF is longer as Steve describes what the dental hygenist did to him in too much detail. There’s a more detailed breakdown of the surprises on the Canadian Olympic hockey roster. There’s another story on the news. Entertainment includes a look at Leno vs. Conan. After the break, there’s more on Burrows vs. Auger. There are also more NHL halfway awards given away. All told, it’s over sixty-five minutes of Lowdown Extra fun. As always, the action comes to you uncut and uncensored.

Lowdown Radio Classic: February 5, 2008

With Jackie out of the HQ for the foreseeable future while in Australia. He also won’t be on the show for the next couple months. It’s actually not an unprecedented event to see Steve without his partner in crime. So to give you a taste what we’re all in for, here’s the last time Steve went solo. On this vintage episode, Steve has to fend for himself without Jackie. But the show starts with Jackie interviewing world renowned relationship expert Dr. Guy Grenier. Following that, Steve helps guys try to pick up women with a good car by visiting the Car Wall. Then Steve previews the UWO USC Presidential election that was eventually won by the evil Stephen Lecce. After the break, it’s entertainment complete with the single of the week. Sports and entertainment are briefly hybrided with a rundown of the Super Bowl 42 commercials. Next are some quick Valentine’s tips… That aren’t exactly great as is typical for The Lowdown. The show wraps up with the return of Oddsmakers. Classic Lowdown greatness that is often imitated but never, ever duplicated.

Lowdown Radio: January 5, 2010

The U of WO is back in session and so is The Lowdown for 2010. As is the custom for the first episode of the new year, tonight’s episode was the year in review show. The show starts with a review of what happened in 2009 and predictions for 2010. One thing that doesn’t change in 2010 is that the news is about sex. Entertainment includes Jackie’s look at 2010 TV debuts as well as an Australian single and a unique It Came From YouTube. The show ends with the third annual Lowdown awards celebrating the great, the good, and the rubbish of 2009.

On the Extra, there are more stories analyzed from the past 12 months, more predictions, and more awards. The news includes two more stories about a dumb reason for being fired and attack monkeys. The Black Eyed Peas earn the first Worst of Music award of 2010. There’s also lots of added banter over the course of the show that had to be cut from the radio version. There’s an additional 56 minutes in this edition of the Extra to make it 1:24:36 long. That’s three times the length of a radio cut of the show and the longest episode of The Lowdown Extra ever. It is also the longest podcast ever produced by a UWO-related talk show. As always, the action comes to you uncut and uncensored.

Lowdown Radio Classic: January 6, 2009

While the next episode of The Lowdown is being scrambled together at the last possible second, let’s rewind the clocks one year. The next show will be the annual year in review. So what better time to review the crews’ predictions for 2009 than when they wrap the year up? On this vintage episode, Steve, his cousin, and The Enge review Rock Band 2. Steve even tries his hand at playing a real guitar after playing the video game axe. In the news, the guys talk about the best-selling 2009 calender on Amazon and why New Year’s Resolutions are bad. Steve debuts his short-lived Money Matters segment. Entertainment features two singles and Jackie’s preview of the winter TV season. After all of that, they finally get to the year in review portion of the show with the top stories of 2008 and predictions for 2009. The night is capped off with the second annual Lowdown Awards show.

Lowdown Radio Classic: December 23, 2008

It’s Christmas Day but that doesn’t mean that today’s vintage episode of The Lowdown is an old Christmas special. In fact, it’s our year-old Festivus special. On this episode of the show, the guys celebrate Festivus in the traditional way. It starts with the Festivus feast prepared by Jackie. They follow this up with their airing of grievances. There’s even a recap of Steve and Jackie’s Christmas carolling adventure. Along the way, the guys drop in some really weird music including the Festivus Song and Bob & Doug McKenzie’s 12 Days of Christmas. The show ends with the feats of strength in which Jackie attempts to pin Steve to end Festivus.

The Lowdown Radio: December 22, 2009

With Christmas just a couple of days away, it was time for the annual Lowdown Christmas Special. Last year’s Festivus show had some weird Christmas music, so the guys decided that they could do a full episode of weird and wacky Christmas music. There are a lot of bands that you’ve heard of that have made bad Christmas music and the gang has found some pretty embarrassing entries into their musical repertoires. There are seven weird songs on tonight’s episode.
