Hockey (Last) Night In Canada: History is Made

The promos for the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs have the tagline “History will be made.” Last night, the Philadelphia Flyers had a chance to make history with a comeback the likes of which has only been made twice. Lowdown Radio: May 11, 2010

The third-last episode of the third radio season may have been at a slow time of year but things are seldom slow at Lowdown HQ. On this episode, Jackie creates a Facebook page for the show and blog. While he was at it, he made one for Steve which caused all hell to break loose. The problems with Steve’s Facebook profile prompted Jackie to take a look at the best prank calls of all-time. (If you listen to the show, it’ll make sense). The news features a couple of quick stories. Entertainment has the usual suspects (Jackie’s single and It Came From YouTube) and Jackie’s exclusive review of Iron Man 2. After the break, the boys attempt to look at the 2010 UEFA Champions League finals. After largely failing at that, they go back to YouTube with some funny hockey clips including a Jaroslav Halak song and more of Randy Moller’s goal calls. It’s 28 great minutes of Lowdown fun and randominity that’s one of the better efforts of the season.

Hockey (Last) Night In Canada: Burn It To The Ground

It was two Eastern Conference semi-final elimination games for hockey fans last night. The Montreal Canadiens were looking to do the impossible yet again by eliminating a superior team in a game seven. No matter what happened in that game, a near riot was expected in Montreal. Meanwhile, Philadelphia was trying to avoid elimination for the third straight game. Two more wins would mean history but a rusty goalie meant their luck had to run out some time. Continue reading →

Hockey (Last) Night In Canada: Second Annual Meltdown

Heading into game six, it looked like it would be a good day for the Vancouver Canucks. Roberto Luongo was playing well. The defence was joining the rush and giving Antti Niemi fits. And Sami Salo’s ruptured testicle wasn’t actually ruptured (which is good news for him and all men). The Chicago Blackhawks, though, knew that they needed a stellar effort to avoid a game seven. Wednesday Link-Off: Bet On A Winner

She may not have topped Maxim’s Hot 100 list this year but Marisa Miller is a perennial contender. And if she actually rides a Harley, all the better.

Hockey (Last) Night In Canada: Hold On For One More Day

A day after the Vancouver Canucks staved off elimination, it was time for the Montreal Canadiens and Philadelphia Flyers to try to pull the same trick. The Flyers just barely survived game four at home but needed to dig deeper on the road in Boston. Meanwhile, Montreal has to bounce back from a game five loss to force a game seven. F1 Spanish GP: Red Bull Grabs By The Horns

McLaren led the first free practice and that was the last time that anyone was close to Red Bull Racing all weekend. Red Bull led the way in the last two practices, qualifying and walked away with near maximum points. Mark Webber led from the start lights to the checkered flag while Sebastian Vettel overcame more reliability issues to finish third. Meanwhile, teams used their three-week break to make the first major updates to their cars and Mercedes was the most radical of the constructors with their changes. Continue reading →

Hockey (Last) Night In Canada: Never Surrender

After having some big disciplinary problems in game four, the Vancouver Canucks had to enter enemy territory to stay in the playoffs. For the Chicago Blackhawks, the plan was simple. Play physical, run Luongo, and ride momentum to a conference final return.
