Sunday marked the second of two trips that the IndyCar Series takes to Canada. After the Toronto Indy, the stars of IndyCar had their second of back-to-back Canadian races in Edmonton on the temporary circuit at the Edmonton City Centre Airport. Twenty-five cars and their drivers took to the track on one of the series’ fastest road courses and the year’s only race on an airport circuit. Continue reading

F1 German GP: Seeing Red
The McLarens showed up this weekend with some new updates which had them fastest in Friday’s opening practice. The Red Bulls had been showing strong pace and Fernando Alonso said that the RB8 was the fastest car since the Bahrain Grand Prix. However, a fast car can only get you so far. Sometimes, having the fastest driver is all you need. After disappointment in the final stretch of the British Grand Prix, Alonso fought off the pressure to pick up his third win of the season. Sunday Link-Off: The New Media Rises
You probably didn’t notice but I was on vacation last week. Thanks to Jackie for covering for me and doing last week’s Wednesday links. I’m back in action today with the Sunday links. We’ve got a big week of programming coming this week. All that’s missing is the podcast. I am hoping to live blog today’s Edmonton Indy over on @LowdownLive but no guarantees. But first, here’s Canadian model Kim Cloutier. If you look up Canadian models on the interweb, she seems to be the consensus favourite.
When I first heard about the theatre shooting in Aurora, Colorado, I didn’t see it first in a newspaper or on TV. Twitter was the first to the story. Here’s a look at how Twitter and the rest of the social media is reshaping the modern newsroom. (GigaOM)
Reader Sarah tipped this next article to us. A while back, we linked to an article about former CNBC, now ESPN sports business reporter Darren Rovell getting duped by a fake tip. It turns out that this sort of thing goes beyond one guy. In fact, there’s a website called HelpAReporterOut which is full of people doing the same thing. (Forbes)
You’d think that being a member of the press during a political campaign would be pretty easy. Everything a candidate or his team says would be on the record. Except that campaign press offices for the two US Presidential candidates get to approve the final wording of quotes under penalty of being cut off from the campaign. (New York Times)
After the jump, the lessons the 2012 US basketball team can learn from the Mighty Ducks, Rush Limbaugh and rational thought are two things that don’t go together and call me Obi. Continue reading
Entertainment Link-Off: Rise!
The final installment of the Batman franchise will lead the majority of the movie talk over the weekend as The Dark Knight Rises hits theatres. So there are two lovely leading ladies vying for Bruce Wayne’s attention including Catwoman played by Anne Hathaway and Miranda Tate played by Marion Cotillard. Let’s kick off the ELO with one of them, so here’s Anne Hathaway..
After the jump, a nice Comic-Con summary, a map of Gotham City, Jason Biggs wanted to be in Magic Mike, Thomas Jane returns as Frank Castle and new music from Boys Like Girls. Continue reading

Inspired by the Globe and Mail’s caption writing person, we waste our time writing funny picture captions for some of the more interesting photos we come across when blogging. So here are some of the best pictures from the past week with a funny (-ish) caption. Continue reading
The Evolution of Formula One (Video and Infographic)
Considering that Formula One race car design has been standardized through the regulations over the last number of years, you’d be forgiven if you didn’t know that the Formula One cars of 2012 are very different than the original cars of 1950. To show the evolution of the cars that are at the pinnacle of world motorsport, we have a video and infographic showing how the cars, engines and steering wheels have changed over the years. F1 Power Rankings: German Grand Prix
We’re two races from Formula One’s annual summer break. This year’s German Grand Prix marks the return to the Hockenheimring after a year’s absence due to alternating the race with the Nurburgring. Heading into this weekend’s race, it looks like the season is going to come down to a battle between Ferrari and Red Bull. As always, a battle at a Tilke-drome will show who has the best chance at a title right now. Continue reading
Wednesday Link-Off: Dangers of the World
Looks like Steve is away for the day and that means I’ll be stepping in for your latest edition of the Wednesday Link-Off. Wait! Don’t run away! Damn it! Well for those that are still around, let’s see what I have pulled up for the weird and wacky over the past few days. Let’s start off the WLO with popular cosplayer Jessica Nigri as Harley Quinn at this year’s Comic-Con.
After the jump 9 healthy alcoholic drinks to consume, don’t surf in Western Australia, people just don’t know how to name their kids anymore, there’s a boom in the sexual activity among 50+ folks, don’t go driving in Russia, listen to a disgruntled Leafs fan sing a song about his favourite team and watch the entire Firefly panel at this year’s Comic Con. Not News of the Week
If it’s not worth talking about, then it must be the Not News of the Week.
A Houston woman got into a car crash with a bus while driving her three kids. When she got out of her car, it wasn’t to find help. She was getting ice cream from the nearby CVS Pharmacy. If that wasn’t enough to cool her down, she also stripped while eating the ice cream. For her trouble, the woman was charged with child endangerment. I hope she tries to defend herself on the grounds of it being 91+ degrees that day. Continue reading
Formula One: 2012 Silverstone Young Drivers Test Recap
As a cost-saving measure, some teams had proposed holding the annual young drivers test at Silverstone after the British Grand Prix rather than holding in Abu Dhabi after the season ended. However, not all the teams agreed with the proposal so we were left with three of the smaller teams sticking around after the British GP to test some potential future F1 stars. Continue reading
