Soccer Night In South Africa: It’s Time For Africa

After years of questioning if they could pull it off, the 2010 World Cup kicked off with a bang in South Africa. Well, “bang” is a relative term. After all, the two Group A matches that opened action in South Africa weren’t stellar displays of football. A pair of draws definitely can’t be considered a highlight when talking about the opening day of the World Cup but that was the only “action” they had. Continue reading

F1 Canadian GP Primer: Drivers and Teams

The Canadian Grand Prix weekend starts tomorrow morning with first practice. Yesterday, I examined all the rules and race strategies that have changed in the two years since the Formula One circus last swept through Montreal. Today, I look at the drivers and teams that will be contesting the 2010 Canadian GP and setting up storylines for the race. Continue reading

Hockey (Last) Night In Canada: The Drought Is Over

A moment of confusion quickly gave way to the biggest moment in a young player’s career. Patrick “20 Cent” Kane danced out from the corner and slid the puck under Michael Leighton but no one realized it except for him. The party was on hold for a moment as the play was briefly reviewed but in the end it was the Chicago Blackhawks lifting the Stanley Cup for the first time in 49 years. Continue reading

F1 Canadian GP Primer: Rules And Strategy

With Formula One’s Canadian Grand Prix taking place this weekend in Montreal, I’m going to catch Canadian race fans up on what will be happening at the track this weekend. The first of the two-part race primer will look at the rules of F1 and strategies employed by teams in the race. Continue reading

Hockey (Last) Night In Canada: Got Defense?

How do you make up for leaky goaltending? Just score plenty of goals! With the series knotted at two, the series headed back to the United Center where the Blackhawks hope to use the home advantage to snatch a win. Goals were exchanged regularly on both ends but only one came up on top and is now another step closer to the Stanley Cup. Continue reading

Hockey (Last) Night In Canada: Make It Best of Three

Game four saw the teams coming in with two different agendas. The Flyers dropped Dan Carcillo for James van Riemskyk to add some scoring punch and lose some careless penalty minutes. The Blackhawks were looking to recapture the dominant play that’s been missing since the midpoint of game two. This could be the most important game of the series. A Flyers win would make the series best of three. A Hawks win would give them a chance to clinch the series in game five. Continue reading

Hockey (Last) Night In Canada: Upon Further Review

On a night when instant replay would have preserved a perfect game in the hockey stronghold of Detroit, it was used to perfection in Philadelphia. A pair of instant replays of close goal calls were used that swung momentum in the game and possibly in the series. Continue reading

Ottawa Soccer League Makes Pansies of Kids

It’s been a long while since I found a good article to tackle in the classic style of the legendary blog Fire Joe Morgan. Normally, the FJM Style is used on opinion pieces but this news article is just too good to pass up. A CBC investigative report discovered that a recreational soccer league in Ottawa will declare any team that wins by more than five goals a loser. Continue reading

Hockey (Last) Night In Canada: It’s Not About the Big Guns

Last night was game 2 of the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals. Unlike the first game, each team was playing a lot more carefully and there were fewer offensive blows on each end. Once again it wasn’t the big names that made the difference in the game and by the end of the night, one of the teams managed to squeeze in a narrow victory. Continue reading

F1 Turkish GP: Tangled Webb

It was supposed to be fairly academic. Mark Webber would lead away from pole. Sebastian Vettel would take advantage of the clean line from his third place starting spot to pass Hamilton for second. Then it would be a simple Sunday drive to the finish and another weekend of Red Bull domination. Unfortunately for the energy drink brigade, it didn’t go according to plan. While Red Bull’s plans didn’t come together, Bernie’s plan for a return to America finally came together and Pirelli’s plan for an entrance into F1 is all but sealed. Continue reading
