Car Wall: Summer Convertibles

Welcome to an old favourite from The Lowdown radio show.  When we wheeled the Car Wall out of storage what we did was rate cars based on how cool they were with cool being how much that a given car would help or hinder you in trying to pick up women.  The rankings are (from least to most cool): Seriously Uncool, Uncool, Cool, and Sub-Zero.  Sounds familiar doesn’t it?  Well, it shouldn’t be so let’s move along.

Is Alexander Keith’s Copying Rickard’s?

I saw an ad on the internet today about a new “Premium White” beer from Alexander Keith’s. They’re the same folks that bring you one of the most widely available India Pale Ales on the market and their relatively new Red Amber Ale. If you look at other Canadian breweries, there is only one other that pushes Red and White ales and that is the Molson-owned Rickard’s. Continue reading

Logos After The Recession

As you know, the economy sucks.  I’m not going to try and explain why the economy is on a continuous tailspin because hedge funds lost all their value because banks defaulted on loans they owe because people they loaned money to defaulted on their loans.

Instead, the global economic crisis has caused some major international corporations to update their logos to reflect the times.

Lowdown Music Show Play List

So we tried our hand at being a music show on Sunday.  If you were interested, here’s the songs we spun while acting like real DJ’s. A special thanks to those who called in to chat and make requests. Another shout out to our recurring guest Graham Page who chatted with us about soccer, motorsports and cars in the run up to 2:00 AM.  The songs listed in red are what I picked and the songs in turquoise are Jackie’s picks. What’s More Embarrassing About This Photo?

Campbell09WilsonCup

Is it the fact that Western Mustang’s coach Brad Campbell can’t hide how upset he is with his team’s performance on Saturday anymore or the fact that I’m excited that I was on the cover of the campus newspaper?  Campbell is in the foreground doing a classic facepalm and I’m in the top-left corner (the brown-haired guy with the beard).

Last Call: Education Piledriver

Let’s end today with a couple of education stories:

An education thinktank believes that the government of Ontario should increase university tuition by 25% in order to deal with the recession.  Their thinking is that this will keep the quality of education at the current level.  Of course, the middle class will no doubt call “shenanigans” on this plan and bounce the government if they go through with this.

But maybe there is a point to raising tuition.  After all, look where the economy went with the current education system.  If somehow dumb people can be filtered out of the education system, then that would help the everyone out a whole bunch.  After all, there’s a fair number of people that have shitloads of book smarts but are an unmitigated disaster if you take them away from a text book.

The second story comes from Connecticut’s education system.  In what also could be considered governmental suicide, Linda McMahon (yes, the same that is married to Vince McMahon and is the CEO of the WWE) has been appointed to the Connecticut state board of education.  At the very least, I’m sure she’ll have some unique solutions to deal with problems in the classroom.

And just because I can put it here, Total Pro Sports points out something curling fans already know.

A New USC Prez, Daytona, and Assorted Randomness

Well, it’s been an interesting week around here at Lowdown HQ.  A monsoon washed through London leaving the parts of campus along the Thames flooded.  We taped a show but we couldn’t get a hold of the interviewee we wanted.  There’s a new boss in town at UWO that I unfortunately won’t work for.  And tomorrow I’m due to colour commentate basketball which is only a problem considering that I know more about BASEketball than basketball.
