The Growing Gap Between the Rich and the Poor (Infographic)

While we seldom use this blog as a political pulpit, we feel as though we have an obligation to ensure that you are exposed to the facts. So much of politics is the spin. Facts, comparatively, are hard to come by. While the Republicans would have you belive that lowering taxes for the rich would benefit everyone, it would really only benefit the rich.

I say that because the wealth gap between the rich and poor has grown massively over the last 90 years. In terms of real dollars, the gap between the average one-percenter and the 99% was never bigger than at the peak of the housing bubble. In 2008 (the last year with complete data), the average pre-tax income of the top 1% was almost $1.1M greater than the bottom 99-percent’s. For these and more facts about the disparity between America’s rich and poor, we have a handy infographic for your perusal. Continue reading

There’s the big discounts on Black Friday. And they even Rickrolled the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. In a follow-up to last year’s Thanksgiving feature, here are 25 more of the great women of the United States. Continue reading

President Obama & Seth Meyers: A Comedy Dream Team

When you think of US President Barack Obama and SNL head writer Seth Meyers, you don’t exactly think of two heavyweights of comedy. But the pair showed they have some serious comedic chops on Saturday night at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner. What is usually a fairly informal affair was even more so as Obama and Meyers made great jokes at the expense of Donald Trump, the Republicans, the media and more.

After the jump, we have videos of both men’s speeches. Continue reading

Not News of the Week

It’s time for the weirdest and wackiest stories from around the world. It’s the Not News of the Week.

A while back, we had a story about a New Zealand lawn bowling star who whipped his little lawn bowling pin to tell his teammates that they were playing like dicks and was banned for 10 years. Well, he appealed his suspension and it was overturned. The Bowls New Zealand judicial committee cited the fact that the event was in the locker room and the player was drunk as mitigating factors to his actions. So while drinking is getting North American sports stars into all sorts of trouble, you can get off easy in New Zealand by claiming that you’re smashed. Continue reading

Soccer Night In South Africa: A Continent’s Last Hope

The knockout round kicked off today at the 2010 World Cup. Two continents could see their last, best hopes for a championship eliminated today. South Korea wasn’t the only Asian side left but were far more likely to be a threat than Japan. Ghana was the last African side in the tournament heading into their clash with the USA. Continue reading

Soccer Night In South Africa: One Last Gasp

Two more groups were decided in today’s action at the 2010 World Cup. At the start of the day, eight teams were in contention to make the second round but only four could advance. Even more amazing was that one team advanced on a last second goal that brought one nation to its feet and another to tears. Continue reading

Soccer Night In South Africa: Tough To Be Favoured

The Germans, Americans and English were all favoured for victory today by the pundits. But if this year’s World Cup has taught us anything so far, it’s that nothing comes easy in football and this tournament is far from predictable. The three favourites finished the day winless but only one walked away today without any points added to their tally. Continue reading

Soccer Night In South Africa: Keeping It Close

Two lacklustre games on the first day of action at the 2010 World Cup gave way to three thrilling games on day two. Action got better as the day went along with the much anticipated game between England and the United States. But it wasn’t the strikers who were the stars of the games today but the goalkeepers who starred today. Continue reading
