The NHL’s trade deadline has come and gone with far more fanfare in the run up to the big day than on deadline day itself. What resulted was TSN’s six-minute deadline day recap which was equivalent to watching auto-fellatio. I’ve been using that word a lot… Probably because I sub-consciously think that the Power Rankings are slightly auto-fellatious. Anyway, the Western Conference gets a lot of mention up top this week in the PR and we have a repeat #1. Continue reading

Steve’s Ridiculous 2011 NHL Trade Deadline Predictions
Every year, I do my ridiculous NHL mock draft which is half serious and half satire. I figured that it would be fun to do the same at the trade deadline. After all, when experts and reporters talk about deals at the trade deadline, they always think that teams will make deals that make sense for all involved. In reality, the NHL doesn’t work that way. Players have no-trade clauses in their contracts and some GMs have no sense whatsoever. So let’s take a fun look at this year’s NHL trade deadline. Continue reading
Sunday Link-Off: Deadline Day Prelude
I’ve never heard of Brazilian model Raica Oliveira before but I’m willing to bet we’ll hear from her again soon.
One of the biggest names in hockey trade rumours is Eklund of HockeyBuzz. He’s a pretty controversial figure among both the traditional and new media members but this piece by Adrian Dater is a refreshingly fair look at the anonymous hockey blogger. (Sports Illustrated)
In the world of TV media peddling trade rumours, Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos really hates TSN. He tried to inform someone on of such on Twitter in what was probably supposed to be a DM. The only problem was that he didn’t DM his thoughts. (Pension Plan Puppets)
Tomorrow is the one year anniversary of the most important day in Canadian history since Henderson scored on September 28, 1972. So here’s another look at the anatomy of Sidney Crosby’s golden goal. (The Globe and Mail)
After the jump, Player X gets censored, Two and a Half Men (on the court and on TV) and a painful way to promote a golf tournament. Continue reading
NHL Power Rankings: Week 21
It’s the last set of Power Rankings before the trade deadline. The problem is that the activity from the last couple of weeks would make you think that the trade deadline is earlier than February 28th. Short of Brad Richards getting traded, I’m not sure if there’s any major moves left to be made. Anyway, there’s a new team on top of the Power Rankings this team but it’s not like they haven’t been there before this season. Continue reading
Sunday Link-Off: New Overlords
To make up for some of the lack of posting last week, here’s 2011 SI Swimsuit Rookie of the Year (and Lowdown HQ favourite) Kate Upton.
Ken Jennings wrote about getting his ass kicked by a super computer. It’s a cool behind the scenes look at the beginning of the end of humanity. (Slate)
Sportswriter Jay Mariotti spoke for the first time since that domestic incident with his girlfriend. Naturally, he took the time to vilify sites like Deadspin. (Deadspin) Like he’s really concerned about Deadspin’s “tabloid journalism.” He’s just pissed at them for exposing him as a jackass repeatedly.
You know who made the LA Lakers the biggest sports team in LA? It was the team doctor that did all the leg work. (ESPN LA)
After the jump, Miss USA’s new career move, 20 Cent Kane’s latest escapades, and real-life Mario Kart. Continue reading
NHL Power Rankings: Week 20
Welcome to a slightly abbreviated version of the Power Rankings. Sadly, I just didn’t have enough time to put together thoughtful analysis of all 30 NHL teams this week. That doesn’t mean that I can’t put a new team on top of the rankings and include all sorts of vintage NHL team logos in this post. You might actually learn a thing or two about the league’s past from this post. Continue reading
NHL Power Rankings: Week 19
Another week, another dose of the NHL analysis and assorted randominity known as the NHL Power Rankings. Once again, there’s a new team atop the rankings but it’s a familiar face that we should be used to see on top of the Power Rankings. Not surprisingly, the Senators, who haven’t won a game in their last ten, are on bottom. Continue reading
NHL Power Rankings: Week 18
Alright, there’s been two whole days of action since we last did the Power Rankings last Thursday. That means we don’t have a lot of movement in the rankings. That doesn’t mean that we don’t have things to talk about thanks to the CBC/NHLPA player survey. It also doesn’t mean that I wasn’t able to move a new team to the top of the Power Rankings. Continue reading
DiPietro vs. Johnson – The First Goalie Fight of the Season
I can’t believe we’ve had to wait until February for our first goalie fight but here it is. You wouldn’t call the Islanders and the Penguins a fight-breeding rivalry but it was at the end of tonight’s game. Rick DiPietro took a shot at Pittsburgh’s Matt Cooke and Brent Johnson took exception. When ensued was what I call a two-hit fight. Johnson hit DiPietro and DiPietro hit the floor. Video and GIF after the jump. Continue reading
Lowdown 2011 NHL All-Star Game Results
Well, we’ve been trying something special with our coverage of the new format NHL All-Star Game. Let’s cap off our coverage with a statistical analysis of who would have won if our two teams had actually faced off. Our readers thought that Team Jackie would have dominated the action and left Team Murray in their dust. But let’s dissect the teams with some fancy maths to find out whose team was most likely to win the big game. Continue reading
