NHL Power Rankings: Week 15

Another week, another set of the NHL Power Rankings. A new team sits on top of the Power Rankings this week. The Vancouver Canucks may be the hottest team in the NHL right now but a loss on Saturday night means I get to use one of my favourite Power Rankings rules on them. While the top five might have changed around, no team moved in or out of it. Continue reading

Ranking The NHL’s 2010-11 Third Jerseys

Every year, NHL teams roll out new jerseys to sell to make money from merchandise sales update the look of a franchise. Sometimes these jerseys are retro uniforms that are a throwback to the good old days of a team. Other jerseys are a completely new look for the franchise. Last year, I ranked the 23 third jerseys regularly used by NHL teams. With four new third jerseys rolled out this season, let’s take another look at the NHL’s best alternate jerseys. NHL Power Rankings: Week 14

The Winter Classic has come and gone but the NHL season still rolls on (just without HBO’s NHL 24/7). That may not be a good thing for the Penguins who continue sliding down the Power Rankings while the Caps move on up. However, for the second week in a row, the Vancouver Canucks are the best team in the league. Continue reading

Best Images of the 2011 Winter Classic

Since 2008, the biggest game of NHL season has been the New Year’s Day outdoor game called the Winter Classic. This year saw the Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin rivalry renewed on the NHL’s biggest stage. The game was originally scheduled to be played in the afternoon but weather pushed puck drop back to Saturday night. The result was a great game that looked spectacular under the lights of Heinz Field. Here are some of the best images of this year’s NHL Winter Classic. Continue reading

NHL Power Rankings: Week 13

For the last time in 2010, it’s time for the weekly NHL Power Rankings. For the first time this season, a Canadian team tops the rankings and it’s probably obvious who it is. Meanwhile, ahead of the Winter Classic on Saturday (or maybe Sunday depending on the weather), the two teams are heading ever so slightly in opposite directions in the Power Rankings. Continue reading

NHL Power Rankings: Week 12

I warned you that I was going to do a gimmick edition of Power Rankings right before Christmas. This week, I look at the NHL’s Christmas wish lists. Every team wants something for Christmas but most deserve something completely different. We also have a new team on top of the rankings followed closely by their state rival. And a division rival of our top two teams finds its way back to last place. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Twas Three Days Til Christmas

Kicking things off is Doctor Who star Karen Gillan. Insert gratuitous finding her under my tree joke here.

Let’s start our pre-Christmas linkdump with a family story. Here’s a profile of Brian Burke and a look at how he coped with his late son coming out of the closet and later dying in a car crash. (GQ)

And back to the usual fare. Here’s a Christmas message from atheist Ricky Gervais about why he’s an atheist. (Wall Street Journal)

Drew Magary has his list of 10 things would be better off without. Happily, religion is at the top of the list. (Deadspin)

After the jump, the NHL on The Price is Right, the People vs. Superman and a video. Continue reading

NHL Power Rankings: Week 11

Another week in the long, cold NHL season has come and gone. Not coming or going is the #1 team in the rankings. The Penguins’ winning streak ended at 12 games in a loss to the Philadelphia Flyers but they’re still the best team in the league right now. Mind you, none of the top three teams changed spots but I’m not convinced that the cream has risen to the top already. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Spin-o-rama

Nearly a year after being named Maxim’s hottest woman of 2010, here’s the obligatory Katy Perry Maxim photo.

In an effort to build the rivalry ahead of the Winter Classic, Vanity Fair did an interview with Sidney Crosby. Naturally, he does nothing to promote the game like say something interesting. (Vanity Fair)

Just in time for Christmas, it’s a look at the science of Santa Claus’ annual world tour. Kids probably shouldn’t click this one. (Daily Telegraph)

What would you do if you were stuck in a snowstorm: Rent a car and offer a foreign woman a ride or use your celebrity to hitch a ride with a fan? Here’s the tales of Joe Posnanski and Peter King. (Deadspin)

After the jump, the Waffle Man, the Madden 12 planning session and the best shootout goal this year. Continue reading
