Formula One: 2015 Jerez Test Recap

Usually the Formula One off-season seems to last forever before the stars of F1’s travelling circus return to the track for pre-season testing. However, if the two-month layoff between Abu Dhabi and Jerez seemed short to you, imagine how short it must have seemed for the teams.

After this first test, the off-season probably seemed far too short for McLaren who barely got any running in over the four days. Lotus was also hoping for a longer break as they missed the first day because they only fired their new Mercedes engine for the first time the day before the test began.

Up front, two of the familiar suspects found themselves frequently near the front of the timesheets with a very unexpected pair of faces in the top two all week.

Car Wall: New for 2015

Since we’ve quasi-relaunched The Lowdown Blog today, I thought that we should do something a little bit different and little bit special for the official launch of the redesign. That’s why today features the first update of the Car Wall in a blog post in over five years. Yeah, this has been coming for a while.

If you’ve been following us since 2007, you know that the Car Wall is sort of what kicked off our Man Lab. The Car Wall is all about those cars that will get you attention from women. The cooler a car is, the more attention that you should get. For example, Kias and Hyundais aren’t cool because they out you as cheap which is not a good first impression.

So for today’s car wall, we have five cars to rate as the new model year gets underway.

F1 Chinese Grand Prix: Isn’t This When We Start Complaining?

f1-2014-china-hamilton-podiumThe only exciting part of this race was the banging and crashing at the start. For the third consecutive Grand Prix, it was Lewis Hamilton who won the race. Without an interruption from the safety car, Hamilton stormed away with his largest margin of the victory of the season. At least the race officials did something to keep us on our toes.

F1 Singapore Grand Prix: This is Why NASCAR Fabricates Cautions

The Formula One World Championship may have left Europe but the change of scenery doesn’t mean that there has been a change at the head of the field. Sebastian Vettel dominated the weekend and the race with such a dominant win that you almost wonder if everyone else ran GP2 cars this weekend instead of F1 cars.

F1 Chinese GP: Time for Tyres

The talk about tyres has been growing since Pirelli took over as the sole tyre manufacture in Formula One. This weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix saw tyres and pit strategy play a significant part. Fernando Alonso won the race but he certainly wasn’t what people were talking about. Even on the podium, the drivers were talking amongst themselves about the effect the tyres had on the race.

Formula One: 2013 2nd Barcelona Test Recap

Once again, the teams returned to the Circuit de Catalunya for one final tune-up before the season-opening Australian Grand Prix which was only two weeks after the conclusion of the test.

F1 January News Roundup: Teams Already Gearing Up For 2014

To show that Formula One teams can agree on nothing, including how best to save costs, three teams participated in the season’s second young drivers test. This week saw Ferrari, Mercedes GP and Force India put some of their potential future drivers through their paces. F1 Italian GP: Need For Speed

It wasn’t quite as perfect as what his teammate did last weekend but it was a victory from pole for Lewis Hamilton in the Italian Grand Prix. Lewis’ win could be considered all the more impressive because this weekend has seen Lewis’ name closely linked with a seat at Mercedes GP starting next season. The Tifosi had something to cheer for as Ferrari-powered cars finished second through fourth but were unable to match McLaren’s pace. Continue reading →

F1 Hungarian GP: Welcome to the Blacktop Parade

We knew coming into this weekend that the Hungaroring isn’t a circuit known for being passing friendly. Despite how interesting the Pirelli tyres have made this season, nothing could save the parade route known as the Hungaroring.
