Vaughn Martin Getting Attention From NFL

About a month ago, I reported that UWO defensive lineman Vaughn Martin declared for the NFL draft.  In response to a comment, I wanted to go check out one of his pro days (where scouts come to see him work out).  Sadly I couldn’t make either of his in London.  Good news is that word has leaked out from the pro day and made it as far up the NFL food chain as ProFootballTalk.com.

He ran the 40-yard dash in 5.04 seconds, bench pressed 225 lbs. 32 times consecutively and did this to a scout: Continue reading

CIS Hockey Championship: Mustangs Lose A Heartbreaker

Six months ago, they were too young to be a threat. Five months ago, their record had them barely making the playoffs. Last month, they looked like fodder for the OUA West regular season champion. Yesterday, they were virtual locks for elimination. And today, when they fell behind to the UNB Varsity Reds, they were overmatched. In the end, the Mustangs’ storybook season came to a heartbreaking end. Continue reading

CIS Hockey Championship Update 3

Well, it turns out that I keep getting all my predictions wrong.  The original ones, the revised ones, the one I’m going to make at the end of the post.  But now it’s time to take a look at the CIS University Cup Hockey Championship final between the UNB Varsity Reds and the Western Mustangs. CIS Hockey Championship Update 2

Yesterday, I gave you an update on how the Western Mustangs could make it to the finals.  Today, here’s the path that the Lakehead Thunderwolves can use to make it to the national championship game in their home town. Continue reading

CIS Hockey Championship Update

Midway through Day 2 at the Canadian University Hockey Championship, everything I (and most experts) predicted has been turned on its head.  Since this is primarily a UWO blog, let’s play out the scenario the Mustangs need to play out for a shot at the University Cup. Continue reading

2009 CIS Hockey Championship Preview

It’s preview week here on The Lowdown Blog.  Right now, I take a break from previewing the 2009 Formula 1 Season and instead preview the 2009 Canadian University Hockey Championships.  This is the third and final of the major mens’ national championships for the 2008-2009 season.  Since I can’t be there in person (though my boss neglected to tell me himself), I’ll give my expert opinion in The Lowdown’s University Cup preview.

The championship consists of six teams: Continue reading

The Mustangs Lose A Heartbreaker To Carleton

With 4.9 seconds to go, the bar on the UWO campus erupted in an almost deafening cheer as Matt Curtis drained two free throws to put the Western Mustangs up 65-64.  With the loudest two-dozen people in the world on their feet, Carleton’s superstar player Stu Turnbull would deflate the room by sinking a mid-range jumper as time expired to win the national semi-final for the Ravens. Weekend Link-Off: I’m A Sens Fan Now

Hilary Duff and Carrie Underwood are now the main attraction of Sens games.

If there wasn’t a good reason to be an Ottawa Senators fan before, you won’t find a better one that getting to see Hilary Duff and Carrie Underwood at each home game.  In case you cared (and you probably shouldn’t), Carrie’s man, Mike Fisher, scored the OT winner at this particular game on Wednesday against Tampa.

By the way, I’m covering the Ontario University hockey championship game at 7:30 on 94.9 FM (in London) and CHRWradio.com.  We’ll be switching off between hockey in London and a national semi-final basketball game in Ottawa.  That should be interesting.

The Western Mustangs drop one local team from the CIS basketball championships.  They have to go through the other today. (The CIS Blog)

CIS Basketball Finals Set and Ontario is Fuming

With all the league championships and last chance qualifiers decided on Saturday night, the CIS have announced the rankings for this weekend’s Canadian University Basketball championships.  Of course, this being sports run by a faceless committee (e.g. the BCS), fans and pundits were crying foul within minutes of the bracket being announced.

Here are the CIS Final 8 that will battle it out for national supremacy (and how they qualified): Continue reading
