Sunday Link-Off: The Old Republic

isabeli-fontana-leonisa14-01It’s been an interesting week in the world of news. A 100-year-old news publication was gutted by someone who thought they knew better. Racism is almost as hot button an issue as it has ever been. Rolling Stone’s rape story fell apart just as the hockey press has seen a bunch of sexual harassment stories come to light. There’s no shortage of stories to read this week.

So let’s not waste any more time. Here’s Brazilian model Isabeli Fontana.

The New Republic is dead (effectively). Long live The New Republic. (The Daily Beast)

Hands up is quickly becoming something more than a sign of surrender. It’s a plea for justice and quality. (The Baffler)

While systemic racism in law enforcement is tearing America apart right now, an entire half of the political spectrum is fanning those flames by blaming the victims. (The Guardian)

Remember the recent story about a gang rape at the University of Virginia? Rolling Stone is backing off on it. (Rolling Stone)

And here’s a look at why the story is falling apart now. (Washington Post)

I don’t know if you’ve heard of it before but Uber is kind of a big deal. (Fusion)

I don’t think I’ve mentioned this before but CM Punk’s appearance on the Art of Wrestling podcast may have set the wrestling world on fire but there’s one important thing that we should take from it. (The Masked Man)

The hockey blogosphere is being held to account. Back in August, Harrison Mooney was turfed by Yahoo Sports for unwanted advances towards women. Last week, Awful Announcing’s Steve Lepore was sent packing for similar (and arguably worse) behaviour. (Deadspin)

And the Denver Post’s Adrian Dater was fired by the newspaper when it came to light that he was using Twitter to solicit nude photos of women. (Deadspin)

The FIA’s World Motor Sport Council received the report of the panel investigating the Jules Bianchi accident. The FIA released a summary with no backup and some major inconsistencies. (Gary Hartstein)

I’ve never heard of Serial but it’s apparently the biggest thing in podcasting right now. (Variety)

The rise and fall of G4. (AV Club)

Fan theories are the best. Here’s one examining if Kevin from the Home Alone series became Jigsaw from the Saw franchise. (Hollywood Prospectus)

One of hockey’s all-time greats Jean Beliveau died last week. You won’t find many better tributes than that by Keith Olbermann.
