Worst of Music: Glee – Rolling in the Deep

Last week in the Lowdown Blog Man Lab, I dissected British singing sensation Adele. I mentioned that I wasn’t a fan but that didn’t mean I wished harm upon her. Unfortunately, last week on Glee, harm is what found her as the Glee cast got a hold of her #1 song Rolling in the Deep. The result is enough for us to call for the cancellation of Glee.

A little digging through the YouTube comments show that our lead voices are Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff. As I mentioned in the Man Lab piece, the great strength of Adele is vocal range and the feeling she puts into her songs. Unfortunately for the folks at Fox, neither Michele or Groff come close on both accounts. Michele doesn’t have any feeling in her performance. It just falls flat despite the fact that she has that slightly overpowering projection that Adele has. Groff actually sings with some feeling but has no range. And the backing choral arrangement is just annoying after a while. Yes, this week’s WoM breakdown actually has proper criticism.

So congrats, Lea, Jonathan and Glee. You’ve won the prestigious Worst of Music award for this week.

Have a better WoM candidate for next week? Drop it in the comments.

  1. Tony Award nominee Jonathan Groff has no range? LOL. Are you kidding?

They did a cover of another cover. It’s not Adele’s version but John Legend’s, so that’s why it sounds this way.

Lea Michele was terribly one-note, but Groff was fantastic. Listen to his renditions of Left Behind, Bohemian Rhapsody and The Flesh Failures/Eyes Look Your Last. Saying he has no range is insulting.
