F1 Canadian Grand Prix: Tyres? What Tyres?

f1-2013-canada-vettel-victoryGiven the recent history of the Canadian Grand Prix and the controversy over the Mercedes GP tyre test, one would have assumed that tyres would have played a factor in the outcome of the race. While the tyres were a story, they weren’t the deciding factor of the Canadian GP as Sebastian Vettel stormed off into the distance en route to a dominant win. Don’t worry, though, there was plenty of off-track drama to keep us entertained.

F1 Power Rankings: Canadian Grand Prix

The Formula One World Championship briefly interrupts the European portion of the season for a quick fly-away adventure to Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix. This is my favourite race of the season but not just because it’s my home race. The Canadian GP is famous for scads passing and being nearly unpredictable. It’s easily one of the most exciting races every year. I may have rank these drivers based on how they’re driving now and how they will do in Canada but we have no idea how this race will pan out.

Who Is Canada’s Next Racing Hero?

Now that the Formula One season is over, it’s time for us to look ahead to the future of motorsport. In Canada, we have an amazing motorsport history. Formula One’s best and most exciting driver, Gilles Villeneuve, hailed from Quebec. His son, Jacques, won the Indy 500 and IndyCar championship before becoming the Formula One World Drivers’ Champion. The most exciting F1 is consistently the Canadian Grand Prix at Montreal. West Hill’s Paul Tracy is one of the winningest drivers in Champ Car (formerly CART) history.

But who is left for Canada to cheer for now. No one is at the top echelon of the sport right. But that isn’t to say we don’t have some potential racing heroes waiting in the wings. So here’s a look at the future of Canadian motorsports. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: And The Games Roll On

As I was going through possible choices to lead off today’s linkdump, I realized that I hadn’t featured a Canadian Olympian. So let’s kick this post off with Canadian heptathlete and hurdler Jessica Zelinka.

Good news! No, great news! The Curiosity rover landed safely on Mars! (io9) So can we send a man to Mars soon?

Mitt Romney has a plan to cut taxes. Actually, no, he doesn’t have a plan. He just says he’ll cut taxes. He has no idea what he’s doing or will do. (Bloomberg)

Not to dwell or anything but the Canadian women’s national team got royally hosed by an incompetent Norwegian official in the Olympic semi-final against the US. (Toronto Star)

After the jump, more on the soccer controversy, interesting Olympic stories and a Batman version of Call Me Maybe. Continue reading

Another 25 Reasons to Love Canada

Here at The Lowdown Blog, we love our country. Not only that but we love the women of Canada. I might be a bit biased but I think that Canadian women are the greatest in the world. F1 Canadian GP: Rubber, Rubber Everywhere

Like the last few years, the story heading into the Canadian Grand Prix was tyres. This year, tyres weren’t expected to be as much of an issue as the pre-race talk suggested that a one-stop strategy was ideal. It turns out that the winning strategy was two stops. Lewis Hamilton used the fresh tyres from his two-stop strategy to beat the one-stop strategy of Fernando Alonso to the win. Hamilton’s win also made it seven different winners from seven races so far this season. Continue reading

F1 Power Rankings: Canadian Grand Prix

After six races, we’ve seen six different race winners and six different drivers set the fastest lap of the race. It looks like removing downforce through the exhaust-blown diffuser ban has levelled the playing field as parity is at an all-time high. With any one of a number of drivers capable of winning any given Sunday, it’s hard to figure out who are the best drivers in F1 right now. I suppose that’s why this week’s F1 Power Ranking has so much change in it. Continue reading

2012 F1 Canadian GP: Drivers And Teams Primer

For the second part of our preview of the 2012 Formula One Canadian Grand Prix, we take a look at the drivers and teams who will be contesting this weekend’s race. There weren’t many changes as the front of the grid since last year’s race as the top four teams and Sauber retained their 2011 driver line-up. The other seven teams had at least one new driver join their team.

So today, we look at the drivers, teams and their 2012 seasons so far. Continue reading

2012 Hottest Canadian Final: Kristin Kreuk vs. Evangeline Lilly

Over the last three weeks, we’ve gone from the 32 hottest Canadians to 16 to 8 to 4 and now to the final two in our 2012 Hottest Canadian showdown. The bracket showdown started off with the favourites having a fairly easy time making their way through but we’ve got two lower seeds in the final. In one corner is currently unemployed Canadian actress Kristin Kreuk. In the other corner is equally as unemployed Canadian actress Evangeline Lilly. Who will be crowned the Hottest Canadian of 2012?
