Feeling counts for so much in music. If you don’t sing a song the right way, you could turn any of the great Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards or Taupin/John songs from epic pieces of musical greatness into steaming piles of shit. And that brings us to this week’s Worst of Music. When you cover the greatest rap song of the 21st century, you have to do it justice to get away without earning a WoM to teach you a lesson. Last week, we heard about country starlet Taylor Swift covering Eminem’s Lose Yourself. It as so bad and soulless that I have no choice but to call it this week’s Worst of Music.
Apparently Taylor has this gimmick where she sings popular songs by local artists. Unfortunately for us, when her tour found its way to Michigan, her artist of choice was Eminem. The song itself is great. I’ve mentioned numerous times before that I love rap and Lose Yourself is one of the best rap songs of the 21st Century. However, Taylor trying to rap this classic is like Bill Shatner doing Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds. A once great song is absolutely destroyed by an artist who just isn’t up to snuff. Actually, I’d call Taylor’s attempt to rap very Shatner-esque in its sound. It’s more spoken than rapped here.
So congrats, Taylor. You’ve won the prestigious Worst of Music award for this week.
