Worst of Music: Katy Perry – Friday

I don’t like using live concert covers as the Worst of Music award winner but this time an exception has been earned. I’ve previously named Rebecca Black’s Friday as the Worst of Music. I even suggested that it could go down as one of the worst songs of 2011. Then I heard Katy Perry’s cover of Friday. Just when I thought that the original was a crime against music, this live cover comes along and takes the crown.

As I mentioned above, Friday is a past WoM winner so I don’t want to revisit what makes it bad in detail. The worst parts of the lyrics are actually cut in Katy’s live cover. However, without her computer-based vocal aids, her voice is all over the place. Without the use of vocal aids, Stephen Colbert is better Friday singer than Katy. And then she takes a pot shot at Rebecca at the end. Who takes a shot at a 13-year-old girl?

So congrats, Katy. You’ve won the prestigious Worst of Music award for this week.

Have a better WoM candidate for next week? Drop it in the comments.

  1. The music video for the song became a hit due to criticism of the songs lyrics the excessive use of on Blacks vocals and the content of the video. ….Wikinews has related news …In late 2010 a client of record label ARK Music Factory told thirteen-year-old classmate Black who is from about the company. Blacks mother Georgina Kelly paid ARK Music 4 000 for a song and accompanying video that included a choice of two pre-written songs.
