E3 2009: The Sony Outlook

The last console manufacturer to go up on the main stage was Sony. The maker of the Playstation 3 and Playstation Portable had some new hardware coming out in addition to the big game unveils. So what did Sony have for us? Find out after the jump.

Among the games unveiled for the PS3 was Uncharted 2: Among Thieves which got a massive response from the live audience. Naughty Dog may be best known (in my books) for creating Crash Bandicoot but it seems to be onto something special here. Assassin’s Creed II was shown on stage with in-game footage which looked absolutely stunning. There was also a trailer with in-game footage for Final Fantasy XIII. Sony and SquareEnix announced that Final Fantasy XIV (14) Online would be exclusively to the PS3. Though with it being an online experience, I would expect it to also be released on PC. They also played in-game footage from Gran Turismo 5 and God of War 3. GoW3 will be released in March 2010 while no release date has been given for GT5.

A sort of sequel to Little Big Planet. Mod Nation Racers was announced as the next in the “Play. Create. Share.” line of game that LBP was a part of. This looks like your standard cartoony carting game complete with weapons. The plus (or minus depending on your perspective) is that you can create different types of characters instead of LBP’s Sackboys. In addition to the character creation, there is fully-customizable track creator that is very quick and easy to use.

Looking at PS3 hardware, we have another case of anything you can do, I can do better. Playstation unveiled its camera peripheral for the PS3, the Playstation Motion Controller. If you recall, the Playstation Eye was previously released for the PS2 and was the first interactive motion camera of its kind for a console. This is just the logical evolution of it to the next gen console.

Sony used their presser to push the Playstation Network (their answer to XBox Live). They’re adding 50 games to the PS1 classics library including Final Fantasy VII. They also pushed “Home” which looks like a cross between a chat room and Second Life… Whatever that is.

Perhaps Sony’s biggest announcement had been leaked but it was still presented with full vigour. The PSP Go was unveiled. The updated portable console is now the size on an iPhone with slide-out controls that make it far smaller than the Nintendo DS. To accommodate the smaller size, it drops the UMD drive for 16 gigabytes of flash memory (like an iPhone). However, Sony won’t be dropping UMD support and will offer all future games as both a download and UMD. They are also cutting the price of PSP development software by 80% to encourage more games to be made for it.

It wasn’t just the new hardware on display for the portable gaming crowd. Gran Turismo is coming to the PSP with the launch of the Go. It will have 800 cars and 35 tracks (60 with all the variants). Metal Gear Solid will add another platform to its growing list with Peace Walker. A Resident Evil game was announced with no details given but is expected to be an original title for the PSP.

After the two hour press conference, there is a lot to be excited about. Mod Nation Racers looks good, but after Little Big Planet, I would expect something that’s part of the “Play. Create. Share.” line of games to be amazing. Assassin’s Creed II still looks good and the in-game footage shown is as good as anything on the market. I’m looking forward to Final Fantasy XIII. After all, when was the last disappointing FF game because I can’t think of one.
