Sure there was a game at night but no one seemed to care. The only game that was on anyone’s mind yesterday was Sidney Crosby and his Pittsburgh Penguins against Alex Ovechkin and his Washington Capitals.
Pittsburgh 2 @ Washington 3 – The big names made an impact on this game with both scoring goals. However, the biggest impact was made in goal by Simeon Varlamov who made 34 saves to give the Caps the early edge in the series. Crosby opened the scoring four-and-a-half minutes into the game but Ovechkin’s goal with three to go in the first gave Washington the lead. Tomas Fleischmann had the game winning goal 106 seconds into the final period but the Penguins were close to scoring several times over the rest of the third period. As much as the NHL wants this series to be about Ovechkin and Crosby, yesterday’s game was more about Varlamov and Fleury.
Washington leads the series 1-0
Chicago 5 @ Vancouver 2 – While Washington-Pittsburgh may be getting all the hype, this is the series that delivers the goods. Vancouver and Roberto Luongo looked to be in the driver’s seat again in game two. Just like game one, though, the Blackhawks fought their way back into this one. Unlike game one, they finished the deal. Despite giving up two quick goals in the first, Chicago never backed down and score 5 unanswered goals en route to embarrassing the Canucks at home. Patrick Sharp led the way offensively with the first two Chicago goals while David Bolland also had a pair of markers. Patrick Kane and Adam Burish contributed two points each for the cause. Interestingly, Sami Salo’s goal was his first this post-season that wasn’t also a game winner.
The series is tied 1-1
