It was do or die for the Sharks as they were on the verge of elimination last night in the Western conference finals in the Stanley Cup playoffs. They certainly didn’t have the home advantage as they were playing the Blackhawks in Chicago. Could the regular underachieving playoff team pull off a victory to keep their Stanley Cup dreams alive? After a four-goal victory in game three, the Montreal Canadiens were looking to carry the momentum into an unusual afternoon game on Saturday. A win by the Habs would mean that we would have a best of three series to determine the Eastern Conference champion. The Flyers are no stranger to having a team down and finishing them. While physical play is an important factor in the game of hockey, other factors like speed and being able to capitalize on plays are also important. Four teams remain in the chase for Lord Stanley’s Cup. They’re each only eight wins away from lifting the Stanley Cup and being crown champions of the National Hockey League. Three of the teams weren’t expected to make it this far. Two teams are from the original six. One is a perennial choker. One has revolving door goaltenders. Two rounds of playoff action are in the books and history has been made. While everything in the Western Conference went according to plan, the Eastern Conference has seen history made repeatedly. As a result, the first vs. second seed matchup in the West is the complete opposite of the East where the seventh and eighth seed faceoff. Two teams are just four wins away from being able to raise a banner to the rafters while one team is just eight wins away from raising Lord Stanley’s Cup. The promos for the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs have the tagline “History will be made.” Last night, the Philadelphia Flyers had a chance to make history with a comeback the likes of which has only been made twice. Down 0-3 to the Boston Bruins, the Flyers have rhymed off three straight wins. Could they complete the comeback and become the third team to win a playoff series from down three? Continue reading
It was two Eastern Conference semi-final elimination games for hockey fans last night. The Montreal Canadiens were looking to do the impossible yet again by eliminating a superior team in a game seven. No matter what happened in that game, a near riot was expected in Montreal.
