Wednesday Link-Off: Book It

tina-fey-emmys13-02Later today, we’ve post the link to this year’s Lowdown Hockey Pool. As always, it’s for bragging rights but who doesn’t like a little friendly competition. Anyway, it’s time for the link. Let’s start with Tina Fey who picked up an Emmy for 30 Rock earlier this week.

It’s not just the Democrats and economists who think that playing chicken with the debt ceiling is hurting the economy. Bush 42’s budget director thinks that political gamesmanship with the debt ceiling hurts the economy. (Washington Post)

Here’s a slightly heartwarming story about a gunman in the Kenyan shopping mall attack freeing a family after a four-year-old boy told him that he was a bad man. (The Independent)

The folks at the Louisville Courier-Journal clearly don’t watch The Newsroom because they printed a letter to the editor from a character using a direct quote from the show. (Mediaite)

The Newsroom: Sorkin’s Modern After School Special

Whenever I see a blogger or TV critic wax poetic about an older network comedy, they often bring up episodes that touched on more serious topics. These episodes that touched on controversial or social issues were called “After School Specials” after the ABC TV movie series of the same name.

After school specials (or “very special episodes” as they were occasionally called in network TV) have essentially disappeared from the network TV landscape. Sure, kids shows will touch on an important topic every now and then but when was the last time you saw something you would call an After School Special. One of the few shows on TV that does touch on important social issues is The Newsroom.
