E3 2015: Microsoft Announces Xbox One Backwards Compatability

microsoft-e3-2015-xbox-one-backward-compatibilityTwo years ago, then-Xbox division boss Don Mattrick said “If you’re backwards compatible, you’re really backwards” claiming that only 5% of users used new consoles to play games from a past generation of consoles. It’s funny how much things can change in two years.

While Microsoft might not have had a mind-blowing press conference in terms of new reveals, they certainly scored more than their fair share of points with hardware announcements. The biggest of those announcements was that Microsoft would be rolling out backwards compatibility of Xbox 360 games on Xbox One.

E3 2015: PC Gaming Show Trailer Roundup

e3-2015-pc-gaming-show-headerFor the first time, E3 had a dedicated show for PC gaming. At some point, I’ll probably pontificate over the dangers of a marketing event that was put together by a video game magazine that supposedly provides independent journalism at another time. For now, a lot of smaller developers brought their new wares to E3 through this new PC gaming show. If you’re a fan of indies and didn’t like what you saw on consoles, this was definitely the conference for you. If you’re looking for triple-As, maybe next year.

E3 2015: Square Enix Trailer Roundup

square-enix-e3-2015-presents-bannerThe pre-E3 media briefings started with a newcomer to the show and ended the same way. It was Square Enix who rounded out the action on Tuesday just before the doors opened on E3 proper. Surprisingly, Square Enix did most of its big reveals before E3 or at the Sony press conference. However, they had one official announcement under their sleeve that surprised no one but was still a welcome sight to gamers.

E3 2015: Ubisoft Trailer Roundup

ubisoft-e3-2015-marqueeI know Ubisoft said that they loved franchises but I didn’t realize that they now considered South Park to be a franchise. They opened with a new South Park game, added a new Ubi-combat based medieval battle game and closed off with another Tom Clancy game. So while Ubisoft is all about doing games that are part of franchises, they actually had one new game that wasn’t part of an established franchise. That’s got to count for something, right?

E3 2015: EA Trailer Roundup

ea-e3-2015-headerI’m not sure that EA is the evil empire anymore. Ubisoft has done a pretty good job over the last year or so of taking that role for themselves. So EA came into E3 with a pretty feel-good line-up of games to show and they did a pretty good job of making sure the hype train left the station. New announcements were few and far between but there was a teaser reveal for the new Mass Effect. That’s gotta count for something.

E3 2015: Bethesda Trailer Roundup

bethesda-e3-2015-headerWith all the pre-amble prior to E3 finally coming to a close this morning, it’s time to start going through some of the new trailers and games that were unveiled at E3.

We’ll start with the first press conference of the week which means that we start with Bethesda. Their rookie effort at E3 focused heavily on their two biggest upcoming releases. Multiple gameplay and features videos of Fallout 4 and Doom made up the majority of the conference. There were a few reveals too including a new Dishonored and spin-offs of Fallout and The Elder Scrolls.

E3 2015: Nintendo Trailer Roundup

nintendo-e3-2015-announcementAs we have come to expect from Nintendo, their E3 presentation focused largely on first-party titles and franchises. While a number of the announced games for the Wii U were previously announced, the 3DS got all of the big surprises and reveals. Nintendo’s handheld got some new entries in a number of Nintendo’s legendary franchises including The Legend of Zeldo, Mario, Metroid and Animal Crossing. While Nintendo might have been lacking the overall punch on console that Sony and Microsoft had, fans should still be happy with what they saw.

E3 2015: PlayStation Trailer Roundup

playstation-e3-2015-bannerThe last of Monday’s press conferences was Sony’s keynote for the PlayStation 4. Okay, there was a couple of token mentions of the Vita but Sony at E3 is all about the PS4. While Sony didn’t have a big backward compatibility announcement like Microsoft did, they might have been able to steal the show with some big announcements like the latest from Media Molecule, Guerilla Games, and Square Enix. One of those latest from Square Enix was an internet-breaking reveal of a full modern remake of Final Fantasy VII.

E3 2015: Microsoft Trailer Roundup

microsoft-e3-2015-bannerThe first of the Monday press conferences was also the first from a console manufacturer. With Microsoft clawing back ground in the current generation console wars, this year’s E3 is the green brand’s opportunity to regain the lead over PlayStation that they had in the PS3/360 generation.

So from Microsoft’s keynote, we have a total of 16 trailers from triple-A and indie games alike for you to watch and get hyped over. They even pulled off a few unexpected third-party coups by getting Dark Souls 3 (From Software is often at Sony press conferences) and Mad Max (featured in Sony’s 2014 E3 presser). That doesn’t mention getting the first official announcement of Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2.

E3 2015: What to Expect from Square Enix’s First Press Conference

square-enix-e3-2015-announcementThe pre-E3 festivities began with a newcomer on Sunday night and will end on Tuesday morning (afternoon away from the west coast) with another newcomer. This time, it’s Square Enix who are making their E3 debut. While they won’t have the Tomb Raider sequel, they have a few other sequels that should excite gamers and the assembled press alike.
