The World’s Biggest Car Shows (Infographic)

Last week, I got a chance to check out the Canadian International Auto Show in downtown Toronto. I thought that it would be just a bunch of cars in a convention centre. While there weren’t many outlandish concept cars at the Toronto auto show, they did have quite a few cars from the big manufacturers setup on stages that you would expect from one of the big international auto shows.

Anyway, if you want to travel for your own major auto show adventure, our friends at Select Car Leasing have put together a handy infographic to show you the best car shows in the world and what to expect at them.

Recreating Famous Movie Road Trips

One thing that I really wanted to do after university was go on a road trip. Sadly, when you’re a broke college student, gas and accommodations were the least of your problems. Being able to afford a car was going to be a much bigger task. Mind you, if the roof wasn’t torn, I was totally buying that 60s Ford Galaxy convertible.

Anyway, just because you couldn’t do a road trip back in the day doesn’t mean that you can’t do one now. Thanks to this handy infographic, maybe you can draw inspiration for your road trips from a movie.

Car Rallies (Almost) Anyone Can Do (Infographic)

Not every car race is in single-seaters or purpose-built racing machines. For some big races, all you need is a car and the willingness to chew through thousands of miles from Point A to Point B. That’s what’s great about car rallies. If you’re willing to put in the effort, you can race. To help you figure out if you can handle a rally, we have a handy infographic for you.

Also, why is the distance rated in Grosjeans? Have we forgotten about Tom Kristensen?

Movie Cars You Can Drive (Infographic)

If you’re in the GTA and watched the news, read the paper or been anywhere downtown, you’re well aware that the 40th Toronto International Film Festival opened up last weekend. I’ve actually been lucky enough to catch a couple of movies (Freeheld and Guantanamo’s Child: Omar Khadr) and will have reviews coming up in the next little bit.

To celebrate the launch of TIFF 2015, we were sent a handy little infographic that explores some of the most famous cars in cinema history. If ever you wanted to know about the history, price and specs of some of the best cars in the history of movies.

Sunday Link-Off: The Road to 2016

nina-dobrev-self15-02I don’t know about the rest of you but I was really, really busy last week. I thought that weeks before and after long weekends were supposed to be fairly easy. Instead, I’m busier this week and weekend than I have been at any point in the last six months. I’m not sure that I can call this a holiday weekend.

But enough of my petty bitching and moaning. I can’t imagine anyone else cares. So let’s just do the Sunday links. Since it’s a Canadian long weekend, let’s kick off with Canadian actress Nina Dobrev.

It’s been a long time since “mission accomplished” was declared in Iraq but it may play a big part in how the 2016 Presidential candidates security and diplomacy policies are evaluated. (Washington Post)

It’s not just his own record that Jeb Bush will be running on. He’ll also be judged on the actions of Bush’s past. (New York Times)

With new agreements for direct publishing onto Facebook, the likes of the New York Times and BuzzFeed could be compromising their editorial standard for traffic. (TKTK)

The Best Car Chases in Movie History (Infographic)

Who doesn’t love a good car chase in a movie? Apparently, most of the movie going public loves car chases too based on how much money Furious 7 made at the box office. But for all the money that Furious 7 and the Fast and the Furious franchise has made, you wouldn’t consider them to have any iconic car chases.

The folks over at TitleMax had a look at great movie car chases through the years and didn’t pick anything to examine that hit theatres beyond 1981. Maybe practical effects should be the norm in car movies and not CGI cars jumping between skyscrapers in the Middle East. Not that I’m calling out any particular movie.

Car Wall: New for 2015

Since we’ve quasi-relaunched The Lowdown Blog today, I thought that we should do something a little bit different and little bit special for the official launch of the redesign. That’s why today features the first update of the Car Wall in a blog post in over five years. Yeah, this has been coming for a while.

If you’ve been following us since 2007, you know that the Car Wall is sort of what kicked off our Man Lab. The Car Wall is all about those cars that will get you attention from women. The cooler a car is, the more attention that you should get. For example, Kias and Hyundais aren’t cool because they out you as cheap which is not a good first impression.

So for today’s car wall, we have five cars to rate as the new model year gets underway.

The Best of Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas 2013

Barrett-Jackson only runs four of its world-famous collector car auctions each year. The final auction is one of its newer ones. This weekend is Barrett-Jackson’s 6th annual Las Vegas auction which appropriately takes place on The Strip at the Mandalay Bay Resort.

Every year, millions of people drop billions of dollars in casinos looking to win the big jackpot. At Barrett-Jackson, car buyers will spend millions of dollars hoping to hit the jackpot by buying the car of their dreams or a collector car that will increase in value. So here are five of my favourite cars from this week’s auction that will be a cool ride for the lucky buyer that hits the auction block jackpot.

The Best of Barrett-Jackson 2013

This week is the world-famous Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction is the premier classic and rare car auction in the world. It’s the sort of thing that rich people go to for buying new status symbols and where real men go to drool over what basically is automotive erotica. It’s basically a week-long celebration of the car where gearheads are king. So to celebrate the year’s biggest car show where the cars and not the manufacturers are the stars, here are ten of my favourite cars from this week’s auction. Continue reading
