Worst of Music: Arctic Monkeys – Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair

For this week’s Worst of Music award, we’ve gone off the board. This week’s WoM winner isn’t on the Billboard Hot 100 or the UK’s Top 40 singles charts. It’s just a song that randomly came on BBC Radio 1. But it was so bad that it stuck in my head as a guaranteed WoM winner. So rather than go to the usual charts, here’s an English indie band by the name of the Arctic Monkeys with Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair.

Most of our WoM winners can be described as making poor attempts to jump on fads, selling out, using horrible backing music and more. Bad lyrics are also fairly common in the WoM but nothing comes close to this effort by the Arctic Monkeys. Normally, I’d complain about the Monkeys trying too hard to be something they’re not by using the early 90s grunge/rock guitar. However, just listen to the lyrics. No line connects to any other line. Individually, they almost don’t make sense. Together, there’s no story or any sort of rhyme or reason to being included in the song. The lyrics of this song show three verses. How can you not string a coherent song together through 12 lines? No wonder why Jeremy Clarkson threatened to land a helicopter during the Arctic Monkeys’ performance at Glastonbury in 2007.

So congrats, Arctic Monkeys. You’ve won the prestigious Worst of Music award for this week.

Have a better WoM candidate for next week? Drop it in the comments.
