WWE Raw Live Blog – Jan. 4, 2010

Tonight’s edition of WWE’s Monday Night Raw is live tonight from Dayton, Ohio. Tonight’s special guest host is the biggest one that the WWE has hired since starting the Raw guest host gimmick. While celebrities like Shaquille O’Neal and Bob Barker may have generated attention from the entertainment press, tonight’s host was one of the biggest stars of the Monday Night Wars when WWF and WCW generated combined cable TV ratings in the double digits. Tonight’s guest host is the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be. Tonight’s guest host is Bret “Hitman” Hart.

Check out the live blog after the jump.

  • 9:03 PM LowdownFM – Hi folks. Giving Scribble a shot for the first time. Also, live blogging from an internet stream until I can get near a TV.
  • 9:04 PM LowdownFM – Here he is. The man of the hour leads off the show. Bret Hart is out to some remixed music.
  • 9:05 PM LowdownFM – Bret leads with “Well, I guess hell froze over.”
  • 9:06 PM LowdownFM – He’s talks about coming back and thanking the fans. They respond with “One more match!” I couldn’t agree more.
  • 9:08 PM LowdownFM – Bret reminisces about the last time he was at this arena. He won the King of the Ring. Then he mentions that Jerry Lawler jumped him. Then he called out Shawn Michaels. This oughta be neat.
  • 9:09 PM LowdownFM – They’re face to face in the ring. Bret wants to bury the hatchet and call for a truce.
  • 9:10 PM LowdownFM – Shawn plays the heal. He says Bret deserved what happened in Montreal. He says Bret disrespected him & the business that night. The fans still say Shawn screwed Bret.
  • 9:14 PM LowdownFM – Shawn brings up that they’ll always be connected by Montreal but they should be remembered for the Ironman Match at WrestleMania 12.
  • 9:14 PM LowdownFM – Bret offers to shake Shawn’s hand and bury the hatchet. Shawn does. No surprise attack… Yet…
  • 9:15 PM LowdownFM – Just when you think HBK is about to lay the Hitman out with Sweet Chin Music. He goes back for a hug. A touching moment that I thought would never come.
  • 9:15 PM LowdownFM – Now Bret calls out Vince.
  • 9:17 PM LowdownFM – No Vince. They plug a couple of matches as we go to commercial.
  • 9:21 PM LowdownFM – Back from commercial. There’s a reporter at the door of Vince McMahon’s office. Vince claims to have been in a meeting. He says no one calls him out. He’ll call Bret out.
  • 9:22 PM LowdownFM – Michael Cole tells us that Melina injured her knee and will forfeit the Divas Championship. They’ll have an eight diva tournament to determine a new champion.
  • 9:23 PM LowdownFM – The first match of the tourney is Maryse against Brie Bella. Well, that’s a good way to kill momentum.
  • 9:26 PM LowdownFM – The other Bella twin tries a swticheroo. Didn’t work. Maryse wins an otherwise unremarkable match.
  • 9:28 PM LowdownFM – The Miz comes out after the match. He flirts with Maryse over the mic on the entrance ramp. Only in pro wrestling…
  • 9:29 PM LowdownFM – We’re now having a US Title #1 Contender match. We go to commercial mid introduction.
  • 9:33 PM LowdownFM – Back from commercial. The four competitors are MVP, Jack Swagger, Carlito and Mark Henry.
  • 9:34 PM LowdownFM – And I just realized that I titled this as 2009. I’d like to ask for a break on that seeing as it’s only 4 days into the year. Banks will accept cheques dated 2009 for the month of January. True fact.
  • 9:35 PM LowdownFM – After being dropped out the ring earlier, Henry has taken control.
  • 9:37 PM LowdownFM – Swagger was locked into a torture rack but MVP hits a superkick. Henry drops Swagger. Henry is knocked out of the ring. Carlito tries charging MVP but he dodges and Swagger is speared. Carlito is dumped out and MVP hits the Playmaker on Swagger for the win.
  • 9:38 PM LowdownFM – Chris Jericho and Big Show are talking in the back. They’re up to something and Jericho is off to guest host Bret Hart about to that now.
  • 9:44 PM LowdownFM – Back from commercial. Some guy is talking to Bret in the back. Jericho walks in and is reminiscing with him about the old days. And my feed crashes. Hang on…
  • 9:46 PM LowdownFM – Sorry about that. Now that I’m back, Triple H is in the back with a midget. HBK walks in. Apparently, it’s a leprechaun and not a midget.
  • 9:48 PM LowdownFM – Santino Marella walks in dressed as Jericho and does a passable impression of Jericho. The leprechaun jumps on Santino on command from H. Santino screams like a little girl while H & HBK talk about the match. As they leave, H calls the leprechaun like a dog.
  • 9:49 PM LowdownFM – After the commercial, it’s Triple H & HBK against Jericho & Big Show for the tag titles. If Jericho & Show lose, then Jericho is banished from Raw.
  • 9:53 PM LowdownFM – While we’re on commercial, the stream I’m watching has unconfirmed reports that Ric Flair and Jeff Hardy are on TNA Impact on Spike tonight. Tonight’s Monday Impact is the debut of Hulk Hogan on TNA. Bret Hart’s return is seen as a way to combat Hogan and not vice versa.
  • 9:53 PM LowdownFM – We’re back. DX is out. Hornswoggle (the aforementioned leprechaun) leads HBK & H out to the ring. I get the feeling that Jericho & Show are in for something more of a handicap match.
  • 9:56 PM LowdownFM – While DX does their intro, Lawler makes a seven dwarfs joke. Hornswoggle apparently said to Hart that he wasn’t happy. Hart answered back “Which one are you?”
  • 9:56 PM LowdownFM – Show & HBK to start. Hornswoggle hides under the ring. H with the blind tag. They try to suplex Show but he reverses and double suplexes DX. Then we go to commercial.
  • 9:58 PM LowdownFM – Appropriately, a Dwayne Johnson movie is being plugged. He’s starring in The Tooth Fairy as a hockey enforcer sentenced to be a tooth fairy. How the mighty have fallen…
  • 10:00 PM LowdownFM – We’re back with Show and H in the ring. Jericho and Show have been working over H during the commercial.
  • 10:01 PM LowdownFM – Show scores a near fall after a leg drop. H looks for a tag but is headed off by Show. Jericho tags in.
  • 10:02 PM LowdownFM – Jericho with the half-nelson. H fights back to his feet in classic “face in peril” style. He then hits a spinebuster and both men are down.
  • 10:03 PM LowdownFM – Show tags in and gets to H before he can tag out. Show looks for a banzai drop but misses.
  • 10:04 PM LowdownFM – HBK gets the hot tag. He hits Show with a few running forearms and a couple dropkicks. He then takes down Jericho.
  • 10:04 PM LowdownFM – HBK goes to the top rope but Jericho knocks him down. Hornswoggle runs in and hits a leg drop. HBK covers for only two.
  • 10:05 PM LowdownFM – HBK tunes the band but is met with a chokeslam. COVER, 2, and NO!
  • 10:06 PM LowdownFM – Jericho is back in. Lionsault. Jericho overshoots. HBK counters out of the Walls. H tags in. PEDIGREE! Show breaks up the cover. Pedigree on Show.
  • 10:07 PM LowdownFM – Jericho shoves H into HBK. School boy rollup with the tights. Cover, 2, NO! Jericho with the Codebreaker but both he & H are down.
  • 10:08 PM LowdownFM – Cover but HBK breaks it up. Hornswoggle is in but gets a boot from Jericho for his trouble. Pedigree countered into the Walls and then Jericho is hit by Sweet Chin Music. H covers and that’s it. DX wins the match and retains the titles.
  • 10:09 PM LowdownFM – I’m not sure that Jericho looks like anything more than a chump after that. DX looked like they went out of their way to make Jericho look weak.
  • 10:10 PM LowdownFM – H gets on the mic and tells Jericho to leave the building. HBK then says that if he’s not down with that, then he has two words for him… (Suck it.) Everyone walks out on Y2J including Show.
  • 10:12 PM LowdownFM – A very weak chorus of Steam’s Kiss Him Goodbye sends Jericho to the back. Even H can’t get the crowd into that. I’d venture a guess that the crowd wants Y2J to stay on Raw.
  • 10:13 PM LowdownFM – In the back, Randy Orton is knocking on Vince’s door. Orton wants something in return for helping Vince deal with Hart.
  • 10:14 PM LowdownFM – When Vince mentions what Hart did to him, he omitted Bret knocking Vince out in the shower while naked. Vince declines Orton’s offer.
  • 10:15 PM LowdownFM – Orton runs into his cohorts DiBiase and Rhodes in the back. If Orton doesn’t beat Kofi Kingston, they’ll throw him out of Legacy. And then we go to commercial.
  • 10:19 PM LowdownFM – While we’re waiting for Raw to return, you can check out our blog: lowdownblog.wordpress.com There’s a Mick Foley-esque cheap plug. And an “I love America” for a cheap pop.
  • 10:20 PM LowdownFM – Next week’s guest host… Mike Tyson! The man who helped put WrestleMania 14 on the map is coming back to the WWE some 12 years later.
  • 10:21 PM LowdownFM – We’re back and the WWE Champion Shamus is coming to the ring.
  • 10:22 PM LowdownFM – Shamus is an Irishman. The nickname “The Celtic Warrior” and the red hair couldn’t give it away enough. Anyway, he says he’s done with Cena and wants a new challenge.
  • 10:23 PM LowdownFM – Shamus issues a challenge and even before he’s done issuing it, Evan Bourne hits the ring.
  • 10:24 PM LowdownFM – He says that all he needs is an opportunity to win the title and he’ll win it. Shamus says they’ll have a match right now. Non-title, of course. If Bourne wins, he’ll get a title shot at the Royal Rumble.
  • 10:25 PM LowdownFM – Bourne throws some quick kicks. It’s a classic battle of size versus speed. Bourne with a Shooting Star Press less than a minute in.
  • 10:26 PM LowdownFM – Shamus catches Bourne off the crossbody and hits a fallaway slam. Fans are chanting for Cena but he’s in Glendale, Arizona at the Fiesta Bowl.
  • 10:26 PM LowdownFM – Shamus in control now. He hits The Razor’s Edge (or whatever he calls it) and gets the three count.
  • 10:27 PM LowdownFM – Meanwhile, in the Fiesta Bowl, Boise is up 10-7 over TCU. If Texas wins, you’ve got to figure that the winner of this game deserves a piece of the national title.
  • 10:28 PM LowdownFM – Still to come tonight on Raw: Bret Hart confronts Vince McMahon and Kofi Kingston battles Randy Orton.
  • 10:29 PM LowdownFM – At the announcers’ table, Cole and Lawler lead into commercial with a tribute to “Dr. Death” Steve Williams.
  • 10:32 PM LowdownFM – Meanwhile, on TNA is WCW (or what they call Impact), the Nasty Boys and Eric Bischoff have shown up. Sean Waltman and Scott Hall were on earlier. It really is turning into WCW.
  • 10:33 PM LowdownFM – We’re back from commercial and we’re getting a Montreal Screwjob retrospective… But it starts with a Hitman legacy clip.
  • 10:35 PM LowdownFM – They have interview clips with Bret and Vince with their own perspectives on the Screwjob.
  • 10:36 PM LowdownFM – They have the classic “Bret screwed Bret” interview clip in there. The Wrestling Observer has a great look at what went down behind the scenes if you want the closest thing to a real history of how the Montreal Screwjob went down.
  • 10:36 PM LowdownFM – Kofi Kingston comes to the ring and we go to break.
  • 10:37 PM LowdownFM – Speaking of Montreal Screwjob, Earl Hebner is reffing a TNA title match between Kurt Angle and AJ Styles.
  • 10:39 PM LowdownFM – And if you’ re interested, there’s a documentary on Bret Hart called Wrestling with Shadows that just happens to include behind the scenes footage from the 1997 Survivor Series. You can check the website for the Film Board of Canada for that.
  • 10:40 PM LowdownFM – We’re back on Raw from Dayton, Ohio. Randy Orton is coming to the ring. Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes are at ringside and are set to toss Orton is he loses tonight.
  • 10:41 PM LowdownFM – The bell rings and Kingston takes control early with a couple of quick kicks. Orton takes control with a headlock and a tackle.
  • 10:43 PM LowdownFM – Either something’s up with the mic work or this is a small crowd. You can hear quite a few individual voices in the crowd. They also don’t seem impressed with much tonight that isn’t Bret Hart. Anyway, Kingston backbody drops Orton out of the ring and we go to break.
  • 10:46 PM LowdownFM – Back on Raw and Orton has a rear chinlock on Kingston on the mat. Kingston lost control after Orton tossed Kingston off the turnbuckle and into the security barrier at ringside. That was a nasty looking bump.
  • 10:47 PM LowdownFM – While Orton is stomping a mudhole in Kingston, Cole says that the Hart & McMahon meeting is up next.
  • 10:48 PM LowdownFM – Orton with a slingshot into the bottom rope but Kingston manages to kick out of the cover at 2. Orton goes back to the rear chinlock.
  • 10:49 PM LowdownFM – Kingston fights out and they collide in the middle of the ring with a double crossbody.
  • 10:51 PM LowdownFM – Kingston takes control with a European uppercut, leg drop, and suicide dive to the outside. What happens to Orton if it’s a double countout. Kingston with a crossbody off the top but Orton kicks out at 2.9.
  • 10:52 PM LowdownFM – Orton tries to toss Kingston out but Kofi bounces off the ropes. RKO attempt blocked and countered into the SOS. Orton kicks out at 2. Another RKO attempt blocked. Trouble in Paradise blocked. RKO… Third time’s the charm. 1, 2, 3 and Orton wins it.
  • 10:54 PM LowdownFM – Meanwhile, more proof that TNA is becoming WCW: Ric Flair is there. He was WCW. And on Raw, McMahon is making his way through the back to confront Bret Hart.
  • 10:57 PM LowdownFM – The Condemned is next on USA. More people are likely to watch that in 10 minutes than watched it in theatres. Was it even in theatres?
  • 10:57 PM LowdownFM – We’re back and Vince McMahon is coming to the ring.
  • 10:58 PM LowdownFM – Cole wonders if McMahon would be willing to bury the hatchet. Ask anyone of his former employees and they’ll tell you Vince is very willing to bury the hatchet… Right in their back.
  • 11:00 PM LowdownFM – Vince opens with “Happy New Year.” Vince feels that Bret and Shawn burying the hatchet was good enough to close the book on the Montreal Screwjob. Then he plugs Tyson next week as Bret makes his way to the ring.
  • 11:00 PM LowdownFM – No music, no nothing as Bret makes his way to the ring. The crowd cheers and gives him a “Bret!” chant as he comes down. Bret takes off his jacket.
  • 11:02 PM LowdownFM – Vince seems apologetic but then busts out a “You screwed you.” The crowd still doesn’t agree with Vince’s assessment. Though, they were fond of Vince finally admitting that Bret knocked him out in the locker room.
  • 11:02 PM LowdownFM – Vince said his piece and ended with hoping that Bret starts with “I’m sorry.”
  • 11:04 PM LowdownFM – Bret says that the two words he’s thinking of were a lot different than what Vince was thinking. He says he was halfway to closing the Montreal Screwjob. He got closure from Shawn. He’s looking for closure from Vince. He says Vince wants closure just as badly.
  • 11:05 PM LowdownFM – Vince does admit he wants closure just as bad as Bret. He reminisces about WrestleMania 2 and how Andre the Giant was the past and Bret was the future at that time.
  • 11:06 PM LowdownFM – Vince goes on to praise Bret as the excellence of execution. He then talks about being a father figure to Bret. Vince then announces that Stu Hart will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame this year.
  • 11:06 PM LowdownFM – I swear that I can hear a “We want Hogan” chant in some small part of the crowd. That’s Orlando, not Dayton.
  • 11:08 PM LowdownFM – Vince says thanks to Bret on behalf of himself and all the fans. He then calls Bret the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be. They shake hands and Vince raises Bret’s hand to salute the crowd.
  • 11:08 PM LowdownFM – Vince then kicks Bret in the nuts and drops him like a sack of potatoes. Vince walks out and doesn’t look back.
  • 11:09 PM LowdownFM – The show ends with Bret glaring at Vince as he walks off. This one isn’t over yet.
  • 11:10 PM LowdownFM – And that ends tonight’s Raw live blog. Thanks for dropping by. Drop by lowdownblog.wordpress.com for sports and pop culture news and views including the occasional look at professional wrestling.
