FOX Announces Primetime Schedule for 2009/2010 Season

glee 1 “Don’t stop believing!” I got that song stuck in my head and it’s on full rotation ever since I watched the extended trailer for the new FOX show “Glee” (the sneak preview airs tomorrow night after American Idol). This is one of the new shows on the FOX 2009/2010 schedule. So does FOX’s schedule look any good? Find out after the jump.

FOX has picked up four of its pilots for the 2009-2010 season, but only one of them will make the fall schedule. “Brothers” starring former NFL-superstar Michael Strahan will join previously announced newbies “Glee” and “The Cleveland Show” in the fall. The other three shows – “Human Target”, “Past Life” and “Sons of Tucson” will debut in January. The network is also introducing a new late-night talk show featuring Wanda Sykes as they send Spike Feresten out the door.

The network is also adding a fall cycle to their hit summer series “So You Think You Can Dance”. It will follow the same schedule as “American Idol” does, with performance shows airing from 8 to 10 p.m. ET on Tuesdays and hour-long results shows at 8 p.m. Wednesdays, leading into “Glee.” FOX Entertainment President Kevin Reilly indicated that this will provide greater stability to their schedule and require less reworking when ratings juggernaut “American Idol” returns in January.

Reilly says he’s not concerned that two back-to-back cycles of “So You Think You Can Dance” will hurt the show (SYTYCD’s summer season starts this week) noting that shows like “The Biggest Loser” and “Dancing with the Stars” did not suffer ratings damage by having multiple cycles per season. Too bad the same can’t be said for “American Gladiators” (yes I’m still sad about that).

Two of FOX’s freshman shows, “Lie to Me” and “Fringe,” will get new nights in the fall. “Lie to Me” will pair with “House” on Mondays, while “Fringe” will move to Thursdays at 9 after “Bones.”

“Brothers” and the show that refuses to die “‘Til Death” will form a comedy block on Friday nights, leading into “Dollhouse.” I’m not too confident that this will work since this has “mismatch” written all over it unlike the pairing of The Sarah Connor Chronicles with Dollhouse. At least if the ratings for Dollhouse hold steady this season, I’ll be satisfied. “The Cleveland Show” will air at 8:30 p.m. Sundays in the fall, then move to 9:30 at midseason when “Sons of Tucson” moves into the 8:30 spot.

“Lie to Me” will bow out at midseason to make room for “24” on Mondays. The new action drama “Human Target” — which deviates quite a bit from the DC comics that it is based off of — will air on Wednesdays after “Idol”. Meanwhile “Past Life” will also look to get a ratings boost in the Tuesday post “Idol” slot.

sarah_connor_chroniclesWith all the open timeslots filled up, clearly there is no room left for cult-fave “The Sarah Connor Chronicles”. FOX decides not to cash in on the upcoming release of “Terminator Salvation” and scrapped the sci-fi Friday nights. The network’s move to keep “Dollhouse” while letting “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” go has drawn out harsh words from “Terminator” fans, but Reilly says the decision didn’t come down to keeping one show over the other.

“‘Terminator’ has completed its run. I think it had a nice little run; it was a good show,” Reilly says. “It wasn’t an either-or. We did see [‘Terminator’] tailing off a bit. It had a nice creative core, but ultimately we made the bet on ‘Dollhouse’ for the night, and felt we had some other shows that would make a better profile for the night.”

While Reilly acknowledged that “The Sarah Connor Chronicles” was not an inexpensive show to make, he blamed the ratings’ downward trend to be the reason for cancellation. Come on, that’s a blatant lie. We all know that it all came down to money. An expensive show like TSCC wasn’t worth it since it can only snag a little over 3 million viewers in the Friday night timeslot. The new season of “Dollhouse” is going to suffer a budget cut, but since it does not rely heavily on special effects like TSCC, it is possible for the show to survive another season. As a Terminator fan, I will miss this show. On the bright side, Summer Glau is now free to look for work elsewhere. Perhaps making an appearance on “Dollhouse” would be a good idea…
