Formula One: 2015 Austria Mid-Season Test

f1-2015-austria-test-palmer-lotusFor the second and final time during the 2015 Formula One World Championship season, the teams stayed on late after a race to do a rare midseason test. All teams but Marussia stayed in Austria and shipped in some new components and drivers to get some running done to improve their cars.

Of course, all of the paddock’s efforts to catch Mercedes once again proved to be futile as the Silver Arrows lead both days of the test. Anybody remember Ferrari’s domination to be this boring? I don’t.

Day 1 (June 23)

f1-2015-austria-test-wehrlein-mercedesThe first day of the test was hampered by on-and-off rain that kept teams from putting in too many dry laps. Teams pushed back the end of running for the day to try to maximize dry running but even that plan was foiled by more rain as the day neared its rescheduled conclusion.

Pascal Wehrlein led the day for Mercedes as the team continued its dominance of the season. Esteban Ocon was second for Force India while testing a new nose design. Max Verstappen rounded out the top three by completing the most laps of any of the days runners with 97.

  1. Pascal Wehrlein – Mercedes – 1:11.005

Day 2 (June 24)

f1-2015-austria-test-gutierrez-ferrariMercedes again topped the times at the Red Bull Ring. This time, it was race-winner Nico Rosberg who was fastest for the Silver Averroes squad. He and Ferrari test driver Esteban Gutierrez were the only two drivers to get under 70 seconds for a fastest lap. As a quick aside, along with Nico Hulkenberg, Gutierrez is also said to be targeted for a Haas F1 ride next season.

Three teams were noted as testing upgrade packages at this test in what I’ve read. Williams was trying some new sidepod winglets ahead of the rear wheels. Force India added more upgrades for the B-spec car that will run in Britain. And McLaren had a substantial number of new components to the car. Whether that will overcome the Honda engine remains to be seen.

  1. Nico Rosberg – Mercedes – 1:09.113
  2. Esteban Gutierrez – Ferrari – 1:09.931
  3. Valtteri Bottas – Williams-Mercedes – 1:10.029
