Before everyone gets really defensive, I’m not naming The Cult as this week’s Worst of Music. I’m also not naming Flo Rida the WoM winner either. This week’s winner is really Budweiser and their marketing department. While Bud usually gets praises from the advertising world for their Super Bowl ads, this year, they committed an atrocity on the music world by mashing up The Cult’s classic She Sells Sanctuary with Flo Rida’s Good Feeling.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the classic She Sells Sanctuary. But tweaking the pitch of the song in order to better fit with the rap stylings of Flo Rida is sacrilege. However, I’m shocking myself by saying that the rapping laid over the classic guitar riffs fo the Cult isn’t even the worst part of the song. (That being said, the lyrics to the rap part of Good Feeling suck but I’ll get back around to that next week.) This mashup really falls apart when the Good Feeling chorus gets wedged in there. It just doesn’t fit at all with the speed or adjusted pitch of She Sells Sanctuary. It was if someone said “The chorus fits with the commercial and we’ve bought the rights to She Sells Sanctuary, so let’s slap it together and call it mashed up.” Unfortunately, that utter lack of care for a rock classic make for a painful song.
So congrats, Budweiser. You’ve won the prestigious Worst of Music award for this week.
