2011 NHL All-Star Game Injury Replacement Mock Draft

It seems that our NHL All-Star Game Mock Draft was cursed before it was even posted. Over the last couple of days, five players have dropped out of the All-Star Game due to injury. Included in the injured players were some of the NHL’s biggest names including Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Jarome Iginla. In order to make our duel of the All-Star GMs fair, Jackie and I are drafting the replacement players.

How do our new teams shape up? Find out after the jump.

In order to make the re-draft as fair as possible, players were replaced in order they were drafted in the first mock draft. For example, Sidney Crosby was the first pick of the draft, therefore Jackie got the first pick to replace him. The draft order was:

  1. Team Jackie: Sidney Crosby, C, Pittsburgh (1st round)
  2. Team Jackie: Tobias Enstrom, D, Atlanta (10th round)
  3. Team Jackie: Jarome Iginla, RW, Calgary (18th round)
  4. Team Murray: Geno Malkin, RW, Pittsburgh (19th round)
  5. Team Murray: Ales Hemsky, RW, Edmonton (21st round)

Basically, Jackie had to take the replacement defencemen and got his pick of the forwards. I was left with the other two.

1st Pick: Team Jackie – Danny Briere, RW, Philadelphia
The often injury prone player is having a stellar season as he already matched his goal total from last year. With Iggy out, I needed a winger and he fits the bill. Plus, if I compare him with Martin Havlat, Briere has a better scoring touch.

2nd Pick: Team Jackie – Keith Yandle, D, Phoenix
Well I don’t have much of a choice given Tobias Enstrom was injured. Yandle’s been having a good season as he’s already surpassed his point total from last year and we’re about halfway through the season.

3rd Pick: Team Jackie – Jeff Skinner, C, Carolina
I’ll take Steve’s strategy with Cam Ward and make use of the hometown advantage. Skinner plays for the Hurricanes and could probably use the additional love from the crowd during the game. Given that he can play along Staal, there’s some offensive chemistry that could be used to my advantage.

4th Pick: Team Murray – Paul Stastny, C, Colorado
Well, it’s not like I have a choice at this point. It’s either Stastny first and Havlat second or the other way around. Stastny isn’t having one of his best seasons but considering that he’s a point per game player, if he isn’t quite on pace for 80 points, he’s having an off-year. Still, he’s got a good passing touch that will add to the copious amounts of passing ability on this squad.

5th Pick: Team Murray – Martin Havlat, RW, Minnesota
Havlat is having his best non-contract year ever. When he’s inspired, he can be a dominant offensive force for his team. Last year, he wasn’t at all worth $5 million. This year, he’s on the edge of the top 20 in points. As I said in yesterday’s Power Rankings, I would have rather had Nick Backstrom or Teemu Selanne to draft but Havlat’s not a bad way to go.
