One Blogger To Rule Them All: Lowdown Fantasy Hockey Pool Update

We’ve just wrapped up Week Nine of 21 in the first ever Lowdown Blog Fantasy Hockey League. This is noteworthy because now all four members of Team Lowdown have played their regular season matchup against each other. So who got the upper hand in our head-to-head matchups? Who is the Lowdown’s supreme blogging fantasy hockey pool champion? Standings, results and analysis after the jump.

Week 1: Team Discovery Channel at District 5

At first I thought goaltending was my weak point. Then I dropped Ondrej Pavelec for Michal Neuvirth and all was right with the world as I swept all three goaltending categories on the strength of his 4-0 opening week. Jackie stayed in this one with hot starts by Clarke MacArthur and Brandon Dubinsky. But I was unsurprisingly victorious in this battle of Lowdown BlogCast hosts.

Winner: Team Discovery Channel 6-1-2

Week 2: District 5 at Engineers of Destruction

After getting swept on goaltending the prior week, Team Jackie rode Henrik Lundqvist to victory in this one as he single-handedly won all the goalie categories. All the skater categories were within a few points of each other by week’s end but Stamkos and Alfie only scored goals for The Enge. If they played on winning teams (at that time) with star players other than themselves, he would’ve had a fighting chance.

Winner: District 5 6-3-0

Week 3: Team Discovery Channel at Engineers of Destruction

Another close week that could have gone either way. Once again, Stamkos and Alfredsson were the only two producing points for The Enge this week. There’s your second fantasy hockey lesson (the first being don’t undervalue goaltending): Don’t build a team with only two star players. If one goes cold, your team is definitely screwed instead of probably screwed.

Winner: Team Discovery Channel 6-3-0

Week 6: Sky Waltzer at Team Discovery Channel

Scott’s first action in intra-blog play was a tall task against my undefeated but suddenly slumping dynamo. The goaltending tandem of Price and Vokoun was more than enough to dispatch me quickly. To add insult to injury, three categories went to the Waltzers by a couple of points with goals being a tie. It could have gone either way but it was an absolute blowout.

Winner: Sky Waltzer 6-2-1

Week 8: Sky Waltzer at District 5

Here’s your fun fact of the season (so far): Scott’s only loss of the season (as of publishing) came to Jackie. Though, funnily enough, Jackie’s only loss of the season was at my hands. Who woulda thunk it? Anyway, continuing the theme of goaltending dominance, Henrik Lundqvist and Ondrej Pavelec beat out Price and Vokoun to basically win the week for Jackie. He also picked up wins in penalty minutes, power play points and assists to clinch victory.

Winner: District 5 6-2-1

Week 9: Engineers of Destruction at Sky Waltzer

Another week where Price and Vokoun dominate the goaltending categories allows Scott to pick up another win in the LBFHL. In the skaters categories, The Enge went 3-2-1, though five of six categories could have changed hands on the final day. And if one of those categories had changed hands, he would have won our blogger competition. However, I ended up with more category wins than him at the end of the day so I’m declaring myself the champion.

Winner: Sky Waltzer 5-3-1

Final Standings
1. Steve: Team Discovery Channel (2-1-0, 4 Pts, 14-10-3)
2. Jackie: District 5 (2-1-0, 4 Pts, 13-11-3)
3. Scott: Sky Waltzer (2-1-0, 4 Pts, 13-11-3)
4. The Enge: Engineers of Destruction (0-3-0, 0 Pts, 9-17-1)

See that? I completely dominated everyone and am declaring myself the Lowdown blogger fantasy hockey league champion. And don’t let the fact that I’ve lost 5 of my 6 non-Team Lowdown matchups convince you otherwise.
