It’s the final day of Comic-Con and there is no big event for the day. However it was a good day for TV shows. Fan favourites like Smallville and Supernatural makes another appearance. Meanwhile Glee is back at Comic-Con to please all the Gleeks out there (though I still don’t know what it’s doing at Comic-Con).
Smallville
It’s the 10th and final season of Smallville! Sometimes it’s hard to believe that this show premiered on The WB 10 years ago with great fanfare. The reception at Comic-Con continues to be warm but the ratings have dropped significantly since then. I’ve always mentioned how the show has gone past its creative peak, but I think I will miss it once it’s all over. It’s also hard to imagine what Comic-Con would be without Smallville since it’s been a staple for so long. Anyway, let’s get to the panel.
- In attendance at this year’s panel included writer/producers Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson and actors Justin Hartley, Erica Durance, Cassidy Freeman and Tom Welling. In addition to that, John Schneider was also there to great fanfare. “Rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated,” he said as he grabbed a seat next to Tom Welling.
- Based on the comments from the panel and the season 10 teaser, Clark’s dead dad John Kent will return for the final season in some capacity. I’ve always liked watching Clark and his relationship with his parents in the earlier years. I miss that now that the show has taken a pretty big turn over the many seasons.
- Once again the producers danced around the question about Clark Kent flying, but at least they’re leaning closer to a ‘yes’ this time around.
- The big villain showing up is Darkseid from the comics, though it will be a bit different in Smallville (then again, what isn’t?).
- Erica Durance will appear in all 22 episodes this season while Justin Hartley will be in 17.
- The door is open for the return of Michael Rosenbaum and the producers urged fans to help get him back onto the show.
- Tom Welling reveals that Clark Kent probably won’t go back to finish his degree in college but ‘hopefully over the internet he will get his Bachelor’s’.
- A few more tidbits on working with Christopher Reeve on the show a few seasons back. Despite his condition, he was a hard worker and worked beyond the doctor recommended 5-6 hours on set.
- The cast was asked what other character they would be if they’re not playing whoever they’re playing right now. Cassidy Freeman wants to be The Green Arrow. John Schneider and Tom Welling wouldn’t budge. Justin Hartley would like to be Lois Lane.
- Many thanks gone out from the cast and crew to the fans. It really feels like Smallville is ending.
Supernatural
From a show that’s actually ending to a show that I thought would have ended, it’s time for Supernatural. With the show going beyond what executive producer Eric Kripke has planned, they certainly have a lot of questions to answer at this year’s panel. In attendance is Eric Kripke, Ben Edlund, new showrunner Sera Gamble and stars Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Misha Collins and Jim Beaver.
- There was a preview of the season’s 4th episode directed by Jensen Ackles. The episode will focus on Bobby trying to get out of the deal he made with Crowley to give away his soul at the end of season 5. Now this should be fun.
- Despite the 5 year plan of the show is done, Kripke sees this as a beginning of a Supernatural sequel.
- Sera Gamble promises that the show is returning back to the monsters of the week theme and there will be further explorations into the backstories of these monsters. She wants to “shoots some monsters in the face.” I think many of the fans approve based on the cheers.
- Ackles stated that when the show returns it will be one year after the “apocalyptic event” and Dean will be living a normal life.
- Padalecki doesn’t know how his character Sam got out of hell. “I’d love to know too. I have absolutely no idea. That’s my answer.”
- Don’t expect Jeffrey Dean Morgan to be back as Papa Winchester. He’s a very busy man.
- Sam and Dean will have some lady drama in an episode featuring a female relative of the Winchesters.
- Misha Collins pitched the idea to have Castiel speak in a Russian accent. It probably won’t pan out.
- Jim Beaver believes that hell will freeze over before Bobby get’s a girlfriend. Awww no love for the scruffy old dude.
- Ben Edlund teases there will be an episode featuring fairies and ‘little people’ will be involved.
- Some fun notes on the Supernatural Japanese anime project. “Good news everybody! They’re not selling it here!” Kripke declares. The benefits of this anime project is that they can throw in shit with tentacles because they tried live action tentacles and they “looked like shit”. Jensen and Jared will be doing voices for a few eps and Jensen chips in “It’s going to be interesting since my Japanese is horrible.”
- Fans want to know if Chuck is God, but Kripke just said “We’re not gonna give an answer. It’s completely open to interpretation. We didn’t want a character to come out in the end and say, ‘And I’m God!’”
- Kripke sorta called M. Night Shyamalan is a douche. That got a lot of fanfare.
- Jensen Ackles revealed that the hardest part of directing was having to pay attention to every single line of dialogue in the script and not just worry about his own lines. Jensen joked that Jim Beaver never hit the marks he wanted him to hit during filming. Jim later mentioned he wanted to joke around to give Jensen a hard time by considering staying in his trailer for 30 minutes after being called to set.
- They took time to poke fun at Canada when a fan complained about the web series not being available there.
- Jensen would like his character to have opportunities to kill vampires properly this season. Apparently there are too many roaming around lately and they need to be rid of. “I’m looking forward to killing some vampires properly this season. There’s a lot of vampires going on these days. I’d like to show people how it’s done properly. Cut this pasty, waify shit out.” Yes, I agree.
- Kripke admits that due to the renewal, certain changes were made to the finale. He said that if it wasn’t renewed, major characters probably would have stayed dead.
Glee
Finally, let’s cap off this roundup with Glee. Along with creator Ryan Murphy, some of the shows stars Jenna Ushkowitz, Amber Riley, Chris Colfer, Naya Rivera, Heather Morris and Kevin McHale were present. While I continue to question why it would be at Comic-Con, let’s take a look at the highlights from the panel.
- Well the Tina/Artie romance will be no more in season 2. That’s because Mike Chang is entering the picture. It’s about freakin’ time they give ‘Other Asian’ something to do! While the audience didn’t approve of the idea with awws and whimpers, McHale (Artie) jumps in and jokes “I can fall out of love too!” He then proceeds to hug Amber Riley.
- Ryan Murphy confirms there will be more focus on story and less on musical numbers. There will be a trim down to 5 songs instead of 8 per episode. I actually like this idea.
- Murphy once again stated that Kurt will find a boyfriend this season. “I wanted Kurt to have the high school experience that I didn’t have,” said Murphy. “I want him to have a boyfriend and for them to be prom king and king. I think that’s something important to put out into the world.”
- In September, the Britney Spears themed episode is called “Britney/Brittany” and will feature six songs. Since Matthew Morrison expressed his objection in having the Britney theme, his character Will Schuester will also be against the idea.
- The cast thinks it’s more intimidating to sing in front of Oprah than Obama.
- Justin Timberlake won’t be appearing on the show, though Ryan Murphy does indicate he has an role for him to play Will’s younger brother. I can see how the curly hair can factor into this.
- The biggest news from the panel is that there will be a Rocky Horror Picture Show-themed episode.
- Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth are expected to return for season 2.
- Murphy also wants to bring in Rachel’s two gay dads into the show at some point.
And that concludes the Comic-Con coverage here at The Lowdown Blog. Thanks for checking in!
