Entertainment Link-Off: WTF

This Sunday marks the debut of the highly anticipated WWII drama The Pacific on HBO. With a price tag of over $150M (US), the miniseries has established itself as the most expensive TV production to ever take place in Australia. I normally enjoy watching war epics, so I was planning to check it out, but since Isabel Lucas is in it, there’s more incentive to tune in!

After the jump, some Tron Legacy stuff, a look at TV shows on the bubble, an excess of Youtube videos and a few links that will make people go “WTF!”

Normally at this time of the year, it’s gets really exciting over in TV-land since everyone is monitoring the ratings to see if their favourite bubble show has any chance of renewal. However since the networks decided to give majority of their shows the early pick-up, the bubble list runs a bit thin this year. Here at Lowdown HQ, we’re still keeping track of the weekly numbers since Chuck has yet to score a renewal. Here’s a nice breakdown of the shows that are on the verge of cancellation. (TV by the Numbers)

Now that Heroes looks like it’s headed for cancellation, let’s have some fun by thinking about where the stars of the show should end up! (Entertainment Weekly)

I do like Scrubs 2.0. While I liked the original show better, I’m starting to warm up to the new cast. However the ratings have been flat and it looks like the creator Bill Lawrence thinks that the show is done as well. (E! Online)

Keri Russell is in talks to team up with the Arrested Development crew for a new pilot. Could this be a TV match made in heaven? (The Hollywood Reporter)

In other TV pilot news, Summer Glau has been cast in NBC’s The Cape. In the show, she plays Orwell, a cute and intrepid investigative blogger who fearlessly goes after corrupt cops and costumed bad guys. I can safely assume she will be spending a lot of time kicking ass. Seems like NBC’s development slate is looking hopeful… assuming these get picked up in May. (The Hollywood Reporter)

Harry Shum Jr. from Glee did an amazing job with the choreograph for LXD during the Oscars on Sunday night. You can catch more of him during the back 9 episodes of Glee when it returns in April (and hopefully he’ll have more dialogue this time around). In the meantime, check out five things you may not know about the Glee actor. (Zap2it)

No one can really top what Ah-nold did in the original Predator movie, but a quasi-reboot with a different cast in a different setting could work. I was a little skeptical after they cast Adrian Brody and Topher Grace, but judging from this preview, it looks like a fun film to check out this summer. (Trailer Addict) I’m sure it can’t be that bad. It does have Morpheus after all!

For those who are up for a good read. Christopher Nolan talks about rebooting Superman as well as a possible third visit to Gotham City. (LA Times)

Whoops! It appears Favreau missed editing a certain part of Iron Man 2 because the trailer revealed Scarlett Johansson’s stunt double in one of the action sequences. (Movieline)

This has been a good week for movie trailers. First, there was Iron Man 2. Then the latest from Tron Legacy finally hits the net! The folks at Latino Review took some time to break down the trailer to look for hidden clues. (Latino Review) Oh while we’re at it, let’s watch the trailer here. I can’t stop repeating the clip. I think I’m suffering from chronic TRON-itis.

A good portion of comic book fans went “WTF?!” when John Krasinski was rumoured to be the top choice to play Captain America earlier in the week. Thankfully crisis has been averted, but it doesn’t look like the alternatives would be a good fit either. (Collider)

Tim Burton has been doing a lot of ‘adaptations’ lately, which begs the question, “where did Tim Burton’s imagination go?” (Entertainment Weekly)

A serious case of WTF. The ending to the new romance drama Remember Me is so distasteful, it may just end up being the worst ending in modern cinema history. Twi-hards, just stick with the Twilight series if you want you R-Pattz fix because you’re better off not seeing this movie. WARNING: Link contains major spoilers. (AICN)

Because there isn’t enough craziness in this world, let’s throw in the Tiger Woods Mistress Beauty Pageant. Wanna guess who the winner is? (Huffington Post)

The state of Florida is considering a new tax incentive bill to draw film production to the state, and a provision in the bill would allow denial of tax breaks to films that feature ‘non-traditional family values.’ So what does that mean? I suppose all you have to do is throw in a f-word and there goes that tax break! (Slashfilm)

Now we all know that horror movies like to use silly gimmicks to grab people’s attention. A new German horror film has decided to create an interactive experience by having the character in the movie call an audience member during the film. What that audience member replies with will dictate how the movie turns out. If everyone happens to turn off their cellphones like regular movies, this will be a case of epic fail. (Gizmodo) This could be fun though… imagine the audience member that picks up the phone happens to be either high or drunk…

In other cellphone + movies news, another person got stabbed for complaining about another moviegoer using her cellphone. (LA Times)

Alright folks, prepare for A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas!  (Collider)

Ever imagine what would happen if the Coen Brothers made every single film in this world? To some, this would be the perfect situation. For those who never really got their offbeat style in cinema, it would be a total nightmare. Anyway, here’s an interesting cast list for what ‘could’ happen if they made Star Wars. (Slashfilm)

Rave reviews have been pouring in for The Pacific! General consensus: While this series contains the typical war movie cliches in there (and a bit of Spielberg’s touch), it is still very engaging. (NY Times) (LA Times) (Washington Post) (Chicago Tribune)

Over at RT, they rank the best of the Best Pictures by comparing the tomatometer. However, could the site be losing some cred by having The Hurt Locker rank higher than Casablanca and All Quiet on the Western Front (which is a far superior war film by the way)? (Rotten Tomatoes)

Avatar may have struck out at the Oscars, but that has not stopped James Cameron from his 3D renaissance. He talks about the technology and the future of filmmaking in this interview. Oh by the way, 3D Titanic will likely come out in 2012. (USA Today)

Alright and let’s end this off with a string of Youtube videos!

First up is Andy Richter chatting about the demise of The Tonight Show he did with Conan O’Brien. I liked what these two offered, so I hope to seeing them again in front of our TV screens sometime this fall.

Tim Burton wacky style + Lady Gaga’s bizarre taste in fashion = the perfect fit! I must say, this is a nifty mash-up. Also kudos to Black20 for throwing in a Zoolander clip in there.

Speaking of mash-ups, how about pairing up Jabba the Hut with the Parks and Recreation theme?

Or better yet, how about Friends with Community? I think this one will make Steve’s ears bleed.

To celebrate the Oscars this past Sunday, the folks at Modern Family decided play a movie themed charades. Like any typical Modern Family situation, hilarity ensues. Seriously, you’ll really like how they did Brokeback Mountain.

Normally I would wait til the radio show to throw in new music, but I’m really digging this stylish fun video for She and Him’s latest single In the Sun. I’ve always had a soft spot for Zooey Deschanel, so I can tolerate the MPDG schtick. Yes, I like the Manic Pixie Dream Girl phenomenon. It happens to be a fantasy that I enjoy since my everyday life isn’t so awesome.

After the Oscars on Sunday, there was a Jimmy Kimmel special that aired and it featured a really funny sketch The Handsome Men’s Club. Now if you’ll excuse me, Steve and I are going to apply to join this club in a desperate attempt to make ourselves look good in order to score some dates with the ladies out there.
