Twilight Link-Off: Let the Wrong One In

There’s a lot of hoopla generated over the big weekend at the box office as hoards of teens, fangirls and maybe some fanboys flocked over to the theatres to see New Moon, the second installment of the Twilight series.

I haven’t seen New Moon, so I can’t go all out and bash it, but I have seen Twilight (not by choice). To be honest, Twilight wasn’t horrible, but at the same time it is not a good movie either. The fact that it is based on a mediocre novel series didn’t help its prospects. The acting was a bit wooden, but can you blame them? [See source material] Anyway, watching or reading Twilight is not as bad as sitting on an electric chair; however it doesn’t deserve all the hype it’s getting right now. If you truly appreciate a great vampire relationship movie, go check out the amazing, yet haunting Swedish flick ‘Let the Right One In’.

I can never seem to get into the whole vampire/human love thing. It worked to a certain extent in Underworld (which is another deeply flawed film) since the female vampire Selena was attracted to a human adult man. However, this concept doesn’t work so well in the Twilight series. It’s not the role reversal, it’s the age issue. Seriously girls, Edward might seem like the perfect guy for you, but does it not disturb you that the vampire is over 100 years old and he’s going out with a teenage girl? We do have a name for something like that in real life, they’re called pedophiles.

Over the past week, there have been plenty of Twilight related stuff piling up. In fact there’s so much that it’s getting it’s very own link-off! Just for kicks let’s take a look at one good and one bad attempt to defend the vampire saga and various items that poke fun or bash the Twilight series after the jump.

Looks like there is a hidden message found in print articles revolving around Twilight. I think there’s a bit of a sexual tension between Edward and Jacob. (Buzzfeed)

New Moon failed to beat out The Dark Knight at the box office last weekend. Fanboys can breathe a sigh of relief. To celebrate this momentous occasion, let’s take a look at a hilarious fanart comic. (L16 @ deviantART)

The Star’s movie critic Peter Howell attempts to defend New Moon by comparing it to the classic ‘Gone With the Wind\. (The Toronto Star) Mr. Howell, I would like to point out that not all films that target the female audience get blasted by critics. Have you not seen the Tomatometer for Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants?

I would love to tear apart the above article, but I don’t need to. Adrienne over at Hard Core Nerdity shared her thoughts and I couldn’t agree more. (Hard Core Nerdity)

Here’s a list of 20 things that fangirls have learned from watching the Twilight movies. (Wired)

Ever wonder why this vampire series is so successful? Well let the folks at The Oatmeal explains The Twilight Formula. (The Oatmeal)

Many ladies out there are telling Robert Pattinson to bite them. On the bright side, the actor has enough sense not to do that. On the down side, it’s giving creepy perverts ideas. (Cinematical)

There are plenty of English literature majors out there picking apart Twilight for its poor structure and grammatical errors. Now other academics are coming out to point out other flaws with the book series. According to a women’s studies professor, this vampire series is anti-feminist. (Telegraph)

When the Potterphiles face-off against the Twihards, we’re in for some Nerdmageddon. Given that I know about fate of the character Pattinson played in the Harry Potter flick, I think I’ll put my money on the little boy wizard. (NBC)

Sooner or later the film adaptation of the fourth book Breaking Dawn will be hitting the screens. Attack of the Show has an exclusive clip of the biggest scene in the movie! (G4TV)

Don’t forget to check out the previous Entertainment Link-Off where there are other Twilight related links including a video of Olivia Munn killing Edward, Conan O’Brien thinking New Moon is a bit too risqué and JoBlo listing ten reasons why Twilight sucks. Oh almost forgot, Brandon Routh and Martha MacIssac demonstrates that it’s a bad idea to date vampires during that certain time of the month. (The Lowdown Blog)

Like any other link-off, this can’t go out without some random Youtube videos. Yes, there are plenty of parodies out including this one from SNL. I must admit, Taylor Swift did a pretty good job hosting the show. I hope her rumoured boyfriend Taylor Lautner doesn’t mind that she’s poking fun at his movies.

A certain group of people never stop blabbering on about how awesome Twilight is and it is starting to get on the nerves of many individuals out there. Skyler Stone came up with the brilliant idea to stage a Twilight intervention in Los Angeles. Twilight fans show up to what they think is the red carpet premiere of New Moon only to discover that they are not going to be seeing the movie but instead will be forced into a vampire intervention. Check out the hilarious video below.

Ok, let’s not end this off on a sour note for the Twilight fans out there. I’ve linked this in an ELO back in late July, but it doesn’t hurt to refresh people’s memories. Director/actor extraordinaire Kevin Smith defends the Twilight fans. His whole rant is quite hilarious and if you do have time, check out his entire Comic-Con panel on Youtube.
