Comic-Con 2009: Sunday Roundup

Sundays are usually a lot quieter than the previous days at Comic-Con. With most of the stuff out of the way, it’s time to focus on two CW shows Smallville and Supernatural. Wait… they both came from the WB back then… CW doesn’t deserve the credit. One show is long past its due date while the other is approaching its end (if the creator gets his way). Check out what happened at the panels after the jump.

Smallville

This fall marks the return of Smallville on the CW. The show has been dumped into Friday nights leading into an America’s Next Top Model repeat (dumb move). While the show could have ended years ago, it is now going into its 9th season. It has gone to the point where I don’t think it should be called Smallville anymore since the show is predominantly in Metropolis now.

So what exactly happened during the panel? Well, let’s take a look!

  • The preview clip reveals the return of many DC characters: Aquaman, Black Canary, Impulse, Cyborg, Zatanna, Martian Manhunter, Supergirl, Green Arrow, the Legion and Watchtower. However, it has been noted that Laura Vandervoort is not returning as Supergirl this season. *snaps*
  • Clark Kent finally has a suit and it’s not spandex!
  • It’s Tom Welling’s first appearance at Comic-Con. About freakin’ time.
  • A fan dressed as Batman asked when will “he” be on the show. Of course everyone just avoided answering that question. Seriously though, where’s Batman?
  • Tom will be directing two episodes this year.
  • Apparently they’re open to doing a season 10. Well… who wants to give the show a title change? Anyone? Bueller?
  • We won’t see Wonder Woman this season, but we might see Erica Durance dress up as her! Woohoo! (Okay fine, she was just joking, but it would be awesome no?)

So it wasn’t exactly the most exciting panel out there, but it did please the Smallville fans out there.

Supernatural

Time for some Supernatural goodness! Yes, many fangirls were disappointed that Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki weren’t there, but hey there’s always Jim Beaver! Ok fine, they can still go crazy over Mischa Collins (Castiel).Well the fans shouldn’t be angry at the Winchester brothers since they were stuck in Vancouver working on the show. Kripke has always planned Supernatural with a five season arc, let’s hope Dawn Ostroff doesn’t mess things up. I’ll be happy if the show goes out on a high note.

Some quick bits from the panel.

  • Mischa Collins was also in attendance as a “consolation prize” (as Kripke put it) for killing him off. During the 5 minute preview, it was announced that Castiel was “dead”… but everyone knows that Mischa has signed on for the season, so chances are, he ain’t dead.
  • The writers are stealing a page out of Paradise Lost by showing a different side of the devil. A more honest one… but not necessarily likeable though.
  • Meg is in the season opener with Rachel Miner as the new meat suit for the demon.
  • Apparently this season won’t be as dark, despite the fact that the apocalypse is happening!
  • Dean takes Castiel to a whorehouse in episode 3. This could only end well.
  • If the show gets picked up for a 6th season, it will start off a new story. Back to the monster of the week scenario with Castiel as the third hunter. Does that sound good?
  • Blame the bad economy. Budget cuts have led to a lack of music in the past season.
  • Lucifer will appear in episodes 1-3.
  • Apparently Mark Pellegrino auditioned for the role of Castiel, but Mischa Collins won that, so the producers gave Mark the consolation prize – he gets to be the devil. Then Mischa chips in: “I could have been Lucifer too.”
  • Mischa calls his Twitter followers Misha’s minions. Nice.

Will Sam and Dean save the world? Find out when the show fifth season premieres this fall. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait! Screw Grey’s Anatomy, Supernatural is the show to watch on Thursdays at 9 pm!
