A bit of investigative reporting by the Daily Mail newspaper in Britain has determined that there are different criteria for scheduling at the famed tennis tournament at the All England Lawn, Tennis, and Croquet Club. The top seeds in the men’s draw are given matches on Centre Court. On the women’s side, the top seeds have been shuffled off to the side to put some of the better looking players on the big stage.
On Sunday night, a spokesman for the All England Club was quoted as saying “Good looks are a factor” for scheduling women’s matches on Centre Court.
The main broadcaster, the BBC, has claimed that they have no influence over who is scheduled where. However, as they usually broadcast action on Centre Court, they won’t complain about having to show the better looking player.
The original Daily Mail article comes complete with photos of the Centre Court beauties and those shunned from the public eye on the side courts. Something tells me this could be the biggest scandal in Britain since last week.
Speaking of beautiful things, the retractable roof over Centre Court was closed for the first time since its installation. The roof was closed during a match between Dinara Safina and Amelie Mauresmo. The roof remained closed for Andy Murray’s five-set epic against Stanislas Wawrinka. Below is footage of the roof closing for the first time.
