The third day of the playoffs brought us a little closer to the next round as one team is closer to advancing. Also, we have a new, and catchier, name for the hockey recap. At least, until the CBC’s legal department decides that my homage/pun of a name is a trademark infringement.
Philadelphia 2 @ Pittsburgh 3 (OT) –It looks like winning the Guerin sweepstakes at the trade deadline finally paid off for the Pens. Bill Guerin scored the first goal for the Pens as well as the overtime winner with a 1:30 to go in the first extra frame. Unusually for playoff overtime, there were three minor penalties called, including back-to-back minors which left Philly down 2 men when scored on. Both goalies played big roles with Biron stopping 46 shots and Fleury turning aside 38.
Pittsburgh leads the series 2-0
Carolina 2 @ New Jersey 1 (OT) –Tim Gleason ruined a goaltending duel less than three minutes into overtime. His blast from the point saw its way past Brodeur for the game winner. The bigger story of the game was an apparent leg injury to Devils captain Jamie Langenbrunner who left in the second after taking a slapshot. According to CBC, Langenbrunner says he is fine and will be ready to go for game 3.
Series tied at 1-1
St. Louis 0 @ Vancouver 3 –It was a close game but the Canucks had a difference maker called Roberto Luongo. Bobby Lu made 30 saves for the shutout, sending St. Louis home needing to win 4 of the next 5 to win the series. The Blues have been snake-bit for the first two games with their shots ringing the iron and being turned aside by highlight reel saves with alarming frequency. Still, after tonight’s game, all the coaches in the Western Conference are shaking with fear when looking ahead to the possibility of facing Luongo.
Vancouver leads the series 2-0
