The Economics of Star Wars (Infographic)

Star Wars is a tale of good vs. evil, the little man against the oppressive regime, and how self-belief begets shrewd negotiations that allowed the creator to retain the rights to sequels, merchandising and a significant portion of the box office gross.

Okay, Star Wars isn’t so much about the last point but that doesn’t mean that a little sci-fi movie that no studio really believed in didn’t become the poster child for the mega movie franchise. Star Wars (AKA Episode IV: A New Hope) was made for a tiny $14 million. It made over $775 million at the box office and nearly double that when adjusted for inflation. That’s just one of the cool facts about the dollars and cents of Star Wars we have for you in this handy infographic.

The Best Top Gear Infographic… In The World

We’re just a few short days from the end of Top Gear. Or perhaps, as Jeremy Clarkson might say through a megaphone, it is not the end. It is not the beginning. It is not the beginning of the end. This is just perhaps the end of the beginning.

On Sunday, Top Gear, in its current form, comes to an end as the BBC burns off the final footage of the Clarkson/Hammond/May era of Top Gear. While Clarkson says that the trio are weeks away from announcing their new gig, there is still one final Top Gear for us to watch.

To look back on the last 21 seasons and 13 years of Top Gear, we have a handy infographic looking back on the best destruction of Top Gear.

The Evolution of the PlayStation Controller

Don’t look now but we’re less than two weeks from E3. As per usual, there is going to be quite a bit of E3 coverage on the blog. Rough plans include rumour roundups, keynote summaries, trailer posts and breaking news.

For now, let’s get you warmed up for E3 with a little infographic. Sure, it’s not E3-related but it’s still video game-related. It’s a look at the history of the PlayStation’s various controllers over the years. Any infographic that name checks Ape Escape is alright by me.

The Best Car Chases in Movie History (Infographic)

Who doesn’t love a good car chase in a movie? Apparently, most of the movie going public loves car chases too based on how much money Furious 7 made at the box office. But for all the money that Furious 7 and the Fast and the Furious franchise has made, you wouldn’t consider them to have any iconic car chases.

The folks over at TitleMax had a look at great movie car chases through the years and didn’t pick anything to examine that hit theatres beyond 1981. Maybe practical effects should be the norm in car movies and not CGI cars jumping between skyscrapers in the Middle East. Not that I’m calling out any particular movie.

The Internet as Superheroes (Infographic)

I think I’ve seen the internet and various mammoth sites around compared to just about everything possible. Well, that was until today when someone on Reddit posted a little infographic that compared to superheroes. Not only are they being compared to superheroes but DC Comics superheroes. That sounds like my sort of infographic.

How to Plan a Game of Thrones Wedding (Infographic)

I don’t remember if I mentioned this but an acquaintance of mine had a plan for her wedding last year. She said she was going to have the Rains of Castamere as she and her new husband walked out of the wedding. I then informed her that if she pulled that stunt, I would dive out a window.

Anyway, you can have a great Game of Thrones themed wedding without murdering at least three guests. After all, people do theme weddings already so why not use the best show on TV as your guide. Fortunately, we have a handy infographic to help you plan that GoT-themed wedding.

Have you ever wanted a way to tell people off without using the typical one or two finger salutes that are common in Western culture? Well wonder no more. Sure, today’s infographic is supposed to be keeping you out of trouble in other cultures where hand gestures mean different things than what you think they mean.

So today’s infographic is a little around the world tour in 18 obscene-ish gestures.

The Homes of Middle-Earth (Infographic)

Am I on too much of an infographic kick right now? Maybe yes. Maybe no. But maybe I stumbled upon an even better one than last week’s. While our old friends at Movoto didn’t put together this look at the homes of Middle-Earth, it’s a fairly comprehensive look at many of the homes, cities and lands that you’ll see in Lord of the Rings. You might even be able to figure out where in Isengard that the Hobbits were taken.

Your Brain on Alcohol vs. Coffee (Infographic)

As I mentioned yesterday, we’re big fans of beer here at The Lowdown. More importantly, we’re even more habitual coffee drinkers. One of our biggest posts of all-time was our look at how alcohol affects your brain when it comes to heavy drinking and hangovers. Now, we look at things from the perspective of how alcohol and caffeine affect your brain before you’re too far gone to function.

The Most Popular Beers in the World (Infographic)

If you’re a long-time fan of The Lowdown, you know that one of our favourite things is alcohol. That’s why we have so many alcohol-themed posts on the blog and drinking jokes on the podcast. So when I saw this look at what the most popular beers in the world in each country are, I knew that I had to post it on the blog and post it two days after St. Patrick’s Day. I kind of dropped the ball on that one. But it’s still a cool infographic and you might learn something about your country’s drinking habits. I certainly was surprised with Canada’s results.
