2011 Spike VGA Trailer Roundup

While the Spike TV Video Game Awards are a bit of a laughing-stock among the video gaming press, everybody watches the VGAs for one reason. We all watch for game announcements and new trailers. This year was no exception as we had scads of new games announced and trailers released. After the jump, we give you each new trailer and analyze each.

Alan Wake’s American Nightmare

Alan Wake has left the comfort of Twin Peaks Bright Falls, Washington, for Arizona in his latest adventure. Based on the trailer, the battle of light vs. dark appears to be the overarching theme in both game play and art design. It looks good so far. I just hope that the fact that it’s an XBox Live Arcade game doesn’t mean it’s watered down.

The Amazing Spider-Man

Your Spidey senses will be tingling if this game is as good as Spiderman 2. Interestingly, this game doesn’t appear to tie in with the 2012 film of the same name but I could be wrong. We don’t learn much from this trailer except that there’s a Y2K-esque crisis which causes robots to run amok in New York. We’ll have to wait for more info but movie/comic book games tend to worry me. Also, that they focused the trailer on combat rather than web-swinging/slinging doesn’t fill me with much confidence. That’s why we play Spiderman games: To spin a web, any size.
Release Date: Summer 2012

BioShock Infinite

Not much new from this BioShock trailer. We still don’t have an exact release date. We don’t have any new info on any as of yet un-revealed gameplay points. We do see some new gameplay clips we hadn’t seen before. We also get more of a look at Columbia and its citizens apart from the ones we’re shooting at. And that last big dude is new. I could be wrong but it looked like he had something to the effect of “Big Body” or “Busy Body” written on his collar.
Release Date: 2012

Command and Conquer: The Generals 2

BioWare takes the reigns of the C&C franchise for the first time. The trailer doesn’t tell us much. It looks like it’s set in the Middle East in the not too distant future. The original C&C: Generals was about the US and China teaming up as world superpowers in the war on terror. I assume that the main plot won’t change in Generals 2.
Release Date: 2013

Diablo 3

This clip isn’t a trailer but the opening cinematic from the game. It does a decent enough job of setting the game up for us. It sounds like an apocalyptic scenario of the forces of heaven and hell doing battle with hell getting a head start on the thing. By the way, how good of a scholar can you be if you figure out the prophecy about all hell breaking loose just as the first fireball vaporizes you?

Fortnite

Epic Games has a new game to follow-up on the success of Gears of War. It appears to be a cartoon-ized zombie apocalypse survival game. Absolutely no information has been released apart from the name but I’m guessing you scavenge for parts by day to build your base and hope to survive at night when the zombies attack. I’ve played flash games like that… I’d assume they’ve got something in mind to make it worth the $60 we’ll have to pay above the price a free flash game.
Release Date: TBA

Hitman: Absolution

I’ll admit that I’m not terribly familiar with the Hitman series. I’m just not a fan of shooters. I can tell you that this game is rumoured to be a gameplay departure from the standard Hitman gameplay. Also, most of the main voice cast appears to be changing. But it looks like our Hitman is out for blood this time and it’s personal. He also seems to be in a world where audio and video don’t sync. And Square Enix took a pot shot at Assassin’s Creed in the trailer. “The Original Assassin” probably isn’t even accurate when you consider ever single game that came before 2000’s Hitman game.
Release Date: 2012

The Last of Us

Naughty Dog’s newest intellectual property is the zombie survival looking game called The Last of Us. The debut trailer doesn’t give us much clues but it looks like two people killing zombies and scavenging supplies to get them by. What’s with the zombie craze in gaming lately? Hopefully this isn’t ND cashing in for a quick buck because we know they’re so much better than that. At least this game looks good for being what appears to be a pre-rendered cutscene captured from a PS3. Not surprisingly, this one is a PS3 exclusive.
Release Date: TBA

Mass Effect 3

We’ve got our first gameplay trailer for ME3 and it looks like we get something that might be a boss fight against a Reaper. I say might because it seems more like a quick-time event boss fight. Run from Point A to Point B and other stuff happens to kill the boss. In this case, intervention from a giant sand worm while Shepard, Garrus and an unnamed Krogan and a Human Male ally run for it. That’s not what my Shepard would do. He’d take it to the Reapers rather than run. But this is BioWare’s Shepard, not mine, so maybe the game will play differently for everyone, even in boss fights. Still, I’m a little worried by this trailer.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Raiden is back in his second starring role in a Metal Gear game. He was previously the main character in MGS2. The difference between MGS2 and MGRR is the gameplay. This game is a big departure from the standard MG gameplay in that your main weapon is a sword and you’ll be using it to carve things up. That appears to be the big selling point: You can take your sword and slice things into many small pieces.
Release Date: 2012

Rainbow Six: Patriots

The latest entry in the Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six series looks like it sees you combat a group of anti-government and/or anti-big business anarchists called The Patriots. The trailer looks amazing an it’s a very relevant concept for the moment. However, I have two issues: 1) Will people still care about this Occupy-type stuff in 2013, and 2) I sympathize with The Patriots position far more than I see them as the villains. That last point could be a big issue.
Release Date: 2013

Tekken Tag Tournament 2

Tekken Tag 2 is a fighting game that finds itself more on the realistic side of the genre than your Mortal Kombats of the world. Like the name implies, you pick two fighters to do battle with a team of two other fighters. Pretty straight forward. The trailer doesn’t actually show the tag but it’s implied. I also doubt that the graphics of the trailer will match the game. And if you want to play the game before next Christmas, it’s already in Japanese arcades.
Release Date: Q4 2012

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD

Tony Hawk is back with a repackaged version of THPS 1 and 2. THPS HD will have select levels HD-ified. No word on what levels will be included but “School” and “Downhill Jam” have been confirmed and “Warehouse” appears in the trailer. I’m hoping that the original soundtracks are included because the soundtracks started getting bad after the THUG games. Also, there has been absolutely no word of gameplay modes but I’d suspect something similar to the original two games plus online multiplayer. If it’s less than $10, I’d consider buying it if they do more than HD parts of the games. Otherwise, I’ve got THPS2 for PS1. I can play that on my PS3.
Release Date: Summer 2012

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron

So the Transformers are back with a game that doesn’t tie-in with a Michael Bay movie. The last game like that, 2010’s Transformers: War For Cybertron, was a generally well-received game that bodes well. This game will chronicle the final battle on Cybertron between the Autobots and Decepticons. No word if you will be able to play campaigns for either side like in War but I’d expect that. But I’d call it unusual for a first trailer to be released in less than 12 months before a release. Not that it would stop a Transformers fan from buying this game.
Release Date: December 1, 2012
