The gang over at recently wrapped up their search for the worst cover song of all-time. Normally, we would expect William Shatner’s cover of Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds to take the top spot. However, the readers of Rolling Stone have found something worse to take the crown from Shatner and I don’t think the world is better for their discovery. The new #1 worst cover of all-time takes our Worst of Music award for this week. It’s Miley Cyrus doing a live cover of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Let me preface with this: Smells Like Teen Spirit is an all-timer in the world of music. There’s no question this is the top grunge song of the early 90s. However, twenty years later in the hands of Miley Cyrus… We knew the song was going to be bad right from the start when Miley cited Nirvana as a band that inspired her. That would explain her propensity for doing pop, country and dance songs. But it would also make perfect sense that she would be inspired by Nirvana seeing as she was born in November 1992 and Kurt Cobain died in 1994. Smells Like Teen Spirit was released in September 1991. The timelines mesh ever so well there. And as bad as her usual music is, it’s nowhere near as painful as her trying to be Cobain. Most singers try to put their own spin on a song they cover. Miley tries to go straight Cobain and we all suffer badly for it. I mean, it’s one of those time that you envy deaf people. Full credit to her band though. They were absolutely perfect. Their performance was a credit to the song. Miley? Not so much.
So congrats, Miley. You’ve won the prestigious Worst of Music award for this week.
