Chances are you’ve heard this week’s WoM winner before. The thing is that you may have heard this song in one of its many knock-off or reworked versions such as Blue and Yellow for the San Diego Chargers, Red and Yellow for the Kansas City Chiefs, Blue and Orange for the New York Mets, White and Navy for the New York Yankees, Black and Purple for the TCU Horned Frogs and Purp and Yellow for the Los Angeles Lakers. The original song by rapper Wiz Khalifa is a song he wants to become the fight song of the Pittsburgh Steelers and is called Black and Yellow.
I have a few problems with this song. First, Wiz wears a Steelers shirt, a Pirates cap and waves a terrible towel during the video. The problem is that he doesn’t rep (I think that’s the correct hip hop term) the Penguins. Since Wiz is a Pittsburgh boy that’s seen three Stanley Cups but doesn’t give any love to the Pens, the song is an instant fail. Secondly, I realize that the intention of this was to be a fight song for the Steelers but where is the fight song in this supposed fight song? Wiz raps about women, diamonds, money and cars but not once mentions the Steelers. You would think that a fight song would mention the team that it’s about at least once. Of course, I’m omitting the fact that the lyrics are as nonsensical as you would expect from any boastful rap song. Finally, I’m sick of all the covers of this song. It’s not a horrible song but it’s so damn overexposed that I don’t want to hear it or a derivative song ever again. And there’s not much more annoying than all the petty little feuds over whose cover of Black and Yellow is better than the rest. You know that Love To Hear the Boos song about the Leafs. There’s a good parody song. It’s original and catchy. All these derivatives of Black and Yellow sound the same.
So congrats, Wiz Khalifa. You’ve won the prestigious Worst of Music award for this week.
