Music Review: Boys Like Girls – Love Drunk

boys like girls love drunk With the first single “Love Drunk” circling the airwaves right now, Boys Like Girls are back with their second album which shares the same name as their lead single. The band hailing from Boston, Massachusetts who is known for their catchy pop/rock tunes will please many fans as their latest album continues to pump out radio friendly tunes.  Does the album generate enough of a buzz to get you to snatch it up from the music store? Find out after the jump.

The album kicks off with a solid opening track “Heart Heart Heartbreak” and it just keeps going from there. Title track and lead single, “Love Drunk,” follows with nifty guitar riffs and blistering drums. There is good reason to why this was the first track to hit the radio stations. With catchy hooks and a gorgeous key change leading to the final moments of the song, there is no doubt that the song has ‘hit’ written all over it as it ascends through the music charts.

Their second single “She’s Got A Boyfriend Now” is a simple tune about the one that got away. While it isn’t very original, it is far from being the weakest track on the album due to the very catchy chorus and instrumental flair.

One of the highlights of the album is the sudden gear shift to a beautiful ballad “Two Is Better Than One”. Lead singer Martin Johnson’s voice works surprisingly well with pop/country superstar Taylor Swift and the song will definitely strike a positive chord with many listeners out there. It is definitely the strongest track in the first half of the album.

The fifth track “Contagious” certainly lives up to its name with its fast-paced tuneful chorus. It is strong enough to be considered as another potential single.

Despite starting off fairly strong, the band does stumble a bit in the second half of the album. While the first two ballads, “Two Is Better Than One” and “Someone Like You” showed considerably amount of maturity, the same can not be said about “The First One.” Perhaps it’s not an entire step back, but the song strays too far into the easy rock category that it just doesn’t seem to fit with the rest of the songs on the CD.

Love Drunk does end with two very strong tracks: “Chemicals Collide,” and “Go.” The former is a fist-pumping, explosive song that could have been a nice alternate opening track to the album. It also comes with a brief chorus chant that will definitely get the crowd going during live performances. Predictably, the disc ends with “Go.” The cello-accompanied ballad is a sweet sincere song that closes out the album on an uplifting mellow note.

Between the self-titled debut album and Love Drunk, it seems like bits and pieces of the writing has gone out the window. In exchange for more tuneful hits, the lyrics were simplified a bit. It is hardly noticeable as everyone is sure to be bopping their heads along to the songs. Also, Johnson’s vocal talent is a wonder to behold. The way he wraps his voice around the verses and choruses is sure to make all the girls’ hearts melt and stimulate inner jealousies of guys who can’t seem to lift and dip their voices in a snap.

The band successfully compiled a bunch of songs that will get listeners to continuously tap their feet along to. The disc is built to please a mass audience as it is upbeat and engaging. It may not be the best album out there, but it’s definitely intoxicating.

Highlights: Heart Heart Heartbreak, Love Drunk, Two Is Better Than One, Contagious, Chemicals Collide, Go
