Michael Vick Signs With Philadelphia Eagles

Michael-Vick-Philadelphia-Eagles-7The weeks of speculation have come to an end. Yesterday, everyone said that he was going to sign in Chicago. Earlier today, Vick was about to become a member of the Buffalo/Toronto Bills. Finally, reports have come out this evening that Michael Vick has signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. The deal has been reported to be a one-year deal with a team option for a second year. The first year of the deal is worth $1.6 million while the option year is worth $5.2 million.

After last year when it seemed as though Kevin Kolb or A.J. Feeley were being groomed to replace incumbent Eagles starting QB Donavon McNabb, it will be interesting to see the locker room fall-out from this signing. McNabb picked up his play by the end of last season, leading the Eagles to the NFC Championship game. McNabb’s contract in 2010 is reportedly worth $11.2 million. That means that, barring a major renegotiation of the cap or a large shuffle by Philly, Vick’s $5.2 million option will be too rich for the Eagles blood. While Philly is giving Vick a chance to restart the career, he’s really just a low-priced insurance option… Who won’t see the field in a real game until at least October 18th (Week 6) in Oakland.

On a different note, does anyone else think that Vick will be victimized by the very loud, very opinionated Philadelphia crowd? McNabb is a hero in this town despite the fact that he has never led the Eagles to a Super Bowl championship. Vick could be seen as either a threat to McNabb’s reign atop the Eagles depth chart. And if memory serves, some of those all ECW crowds could be pretty rowdy. If Vick couldn’t handle the crowds in Atlanta, could he handle a crowd that may chant “You fucked up!” Maybe “Sit the fuck down!” when he comes off the bench for McNabb.
